Zach Lowe tells Utah (and a couple other teams) what to do in free agency

As Lowe says (and many of us have been saying), the jazz have a competitive advantage right now in terms of adding talent via Free Agency. When you have that advantage, and it doesn't stand to ruin future flexibility, then you do it every ****ing time.

Hood was awesome at the end of last year. But he also had chronic foot issues and chronic diarrhea. He's an injury question mark, and you don't want that getting in the way of a launch-pad year.

Jingles is a good player, but you can get better. And you should if you can.

Burks can and will play the combo guard. Minutes available.

Everything adds up to a spending spree. I'll be pissed if they don't.

Exactly, we simply don't care if Burks is a little miffed because he loses 5 minutes a game to a +11 Warp player, NBA champion Danny Green.

Gobert/Pleiss
Favors/Booker/Lyles
Carroll(Middleton)/Hood/Ingles(Johnson if Ingles moves on)
Hayward/Burks/Millsap
Exum/Cotton/Hanlan

14 players and that looks excellent to me. Ingless and Millsap are end of benchers. Burks has already shown he is aquality guy and wont freak out like Kanter did. That's a lot of D, attitude, length and there are 7-8 guys that can play two positions making them very adaptable. Plus some shooters in Hayward, Hood, Carroll and Burks. The end of benchers are quality character guys that helps build the chemistry of the locker room.

Edit: Left off Burke but that's ok.

No you don't

It's like you didn't even listen to a word I said.

I never said anything about Millsap and the other D League quality guys. We have 3 wings that we really like. There only 96 minutes to go the wings. Maybe a little more if you go small, but all that's doing is taking either Gobert or Favors off the court.

Did you see what happened in Phoenix when they took your approach and just added talent (Isiah Thomas) just to add talent?

There are many other cases too.

I can almost guarantee you that if you add a wing like Green or Carroll, you will make somebody like Hood or Burks not very happy, and will probably ask for a trade.

Ypu better have an idea that you already want to trade Burks or Hood before you do it. If you really like both of them, then you have to think twice about hiring their replacement.

Cmom, snap out of it. That's some really short memory if you can't remember what just happened with Kanter.

Except that this isn't the Phoenix situation at all bruh. You had 3 guys in Phoenix that all want their hands on the ball because they are all POINT GUARDS! That was the problem... even so they alleviated the logjam and acquired 3 first round picks for their trouble. You almost always have 2 wings on the court at the same time so there is 96 minutes... We are likely going to want to play small ball so there is another 10 or so minutes... and there is also the possibility of sitting Burke (assuming we don't get another backup) and playing Burks at spot minutes at the point guard. There are also injuries as we found out last year.

You may have heard of this whole positionless basketball thing... Its kind of the rage in the NBA right now.

Worst case the less talented player gets mad and wants out... you then trade him or her for other assets and end with a more talented team.

I'm also not worried about hurting these guys feelings. They have been competing in sports for their whole lives... they know the damned drill... if you want more PT then play better.

Also one of Hood or Burks is going to have to come off the bench... should we trade someone to not rock the boat? Not using our cap space to improve the talent level on this team would be stupid. Next year everything will cost 25-30% more and everyone will have space so we will be shopping at the bottom of the barrel. Add stuff now while you can (or at least I hope we can).

If you don't think Burks is going to be upset if he gets limited minutes, you are crazy.

It's fine if you just aren't sure about him, and wouldn't mind moving on. I have my questions too.

But think about it. Burks spend all that time on the bench waiting his turn playing behind guys like Raja Bell, now you want to tell him he's going back to the bench with limited minutes for the foreseeable future, or until someone gets hurt. Or that it's a competition but not really because you promised your new prized free agent minutes.

It's not going to go well. I promise you it wont. Players want to play, especially if they feel they have earned it and are good enough. You can convince a guy like Ingles he has to earn it and wait his turn, but not Burks. He has already been through that.

Derrrrrr.... make same mistakes, repeat history, me learns nothing.

Aaron Afflalo wants a 1-2 years deal... Do it!

You remember the Raja Bell last couple years right... That's what Afflalo is about to give some poor NBA team. Dude was awful last year.

All I ever hear about is carroll, green, kahwi, and butler.
Our most stacked part of our team.

Our biggest needs are backup center and a point guard.
Are there any backup centers or point guards available?

If not, let the cake bake

So Burks is going to be upset about not getting a ton of minutes......

Is he going to sulk and cry or work harder?

I'm pretty sure David Lee, who was a way more established and more highly paid player, hardly even played all season and the Warriors won it. Wonder what would happen if Steve Kerr was overly worried about Lee's feelings.

Carroll and Middleton are both better starters alongside Hayward than Burks is. If we can get them, I'd be all for it.

Well guess what smart pants. I bet that ****ing cake bakes. Proving that DL isn't taking your approach.

Aldridge is an especially interesting case who could tilt the balance of power in the Western Conference. Executives have been whispering for months that San Antonio is his preferred destination, and the Spurs could clear room by re-signing Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili on the cheap; trading Tiago Splitter; and letting Danny Green walk

If Aldridge and Duncan are their frontcourt - who is the center? (not that it matters, just irritating the scab that is Duncan's claim he's a PF).

Or it means we lost in the FA market. Even if we add a FA this season we may not even hit the salary floor the following season. No way is DL dumb enough to pass on adding a quality player if he can.

Do you even watch the games?

Burks is not playing point guard.

Also, I doubt Burke is permanently benched. We also have Olivier who has been talked about playing the 2 gaurd.

Unless a trade is in the works for Burke or Burks, that cake is baking. They aren't going to bring someone in just because and over crowd things just because free agents are cheap.

Do you go out and buy a truck everytime it's truck month, and trucks are on sale?

Hood goes to the locker room every damn game... you don't think we should add talent just in case. Hayward gets 32 minutes per so he is fresh all year (btw only one Spur average 32 minutes a game and no one else was over 20 minutes per... guy might know what he is doing). That leaves 64 other minutes at the wing... find 10 minutes for small ball lineups and 10 minutes from the PG spot and you have roughly 28 minutes for the other guys. Add in an injury or two and guys are getting enough minutes. Matchups will dictate who gets more or less, but you would be prolonging these guys careers and none of them would be living on the bench. Danny Green played 28.5 minutes per game last year his minutes wouldn't change at all. Hood played 24 minutes during the second half of last year... Burks sacrifices a few minutes per game... big freaking whoop.

Hey everyone, let's go sign Lamarcus Aldridge. Talent is cheap these days. I'm sure Favors will be cool with that.

Can never have too much talent.

Last time I checked Hanlan hasn't signed a contract to be on the Utah Jazz.

Every god damn game... Every. One.

Doesn't have to be Burks either... we run a system that is predicated on ball movement. I would rather have Burks or Hood playing all of Trey's point guard minutes. We don't have to keep him he could and should be moved in this scenario. Would you rather have Burks/Hood running a pick and roll with the shot clock at 6-7 seconds or Burke. Either guy can guard the point guard at Burke type levels as well so please don't use that excuse.

Burks played pg in Corbin's gawd awful alfense... 10 minutes a night in Quinn's system won't be bad.

Also, Burks just came off major surgery. Adding more depth would be smart.
