What's new

Official: Fire Dennis Lindsey thread

I'm not going to be critical of DL's draft choices as he's done pretty well. No GM bats 1.000 and DL has been pretty solid.

I'm not critical of the trades he's made, either. He tends to only make trades that are low-risk.

DL doesn't tend to make a splash in free agency. That can be something a fan can criticize.

Though I think his biggest valid criticism is the fact he let some of our former players walk instead of trading them for something - ANYTHING. Guys like, Millsap, Jefferson, etc.

At the moment, I don't think he should be fired. This offseason will be very telling. DL MUST improve the depth of the bench. Getting a #1 scoring option would be great but as I've said prior, if we don't upgrade our backup PG, Ingles & Johnson and our bench continues to be this weak the Jazz will have trouble getting out of the first round of the playoffs.

Getting Exum and Burks back will be great but injuries happen. Our bench needs major help so if there is an injury we don't stink to high heaven. And DL must make it happen.

He did that with Kanter and the board loves him for that, right?

Personally, I'm not critical of that particular trade as we got something. Kanter is a cancer and we got 1st and second round picks out of him and if Durant leaves those 2017 picks could be nice.

The OKC pick is lottery protected. And the 2nd-rounder comes from Detroit, not OKC.

I could be wrong, but I think the earliest OKC's pick can be conveyed is 2018 due to the "Stepien" rule (can't trade all 1st round picks in successive drafts). But hey, don't forget DL also got Pleiss in the trade and signed him to a 3yr deal. Oh yeah, Garrett too. Pure GENIUS!

My bad on the 2nd rounder. I read an old article regarding the trade and it didn't differentiate the pick. Detroit is a fringe playoff team so it sure beats a GS 2nd rounder.

I didn't mention Pleiss or Jerrett on purpose. ha ha. I figured it would take away from the 1st round pick. So let's hope OKC juuuuust missed the playoffs so we can get the 15th pick. I checked out draft picks on Real GM and wow do we have a lot - glad we have plenty in the 2017 draft as that could be fun.

Basically every championship team drafts their best player... Very few teams actually acquire them in free agency or through trade. Miami is the exception and Boston acquired half of their big 4 through trade. DL flaw to me has been in ignoring the other two team building methods. I think the main guys that we have are good but he is married to filling the other roster spots with these second round picks with low upside and d league guys with low upside. I get it we are mining for gold but do that with 2 roster spots not 4 or 5.

I got off on a tangent basically I think DL has done well with the most important part of being a GM in drafting but you can't ignore/punt the other parts. He has been mediocre on the trades he's completed and not aggressive enough in pursuing some of those deals and free agency has been an F. No important signings... None. He also botched the Hayward free agency pretty hard. I wouldn't fire the guy... I think he's good but we need to be more aggressive.

I don't want to make my own thread for this, but does anyone think Memphis would entertain trading Marc Gasol for Rudy Gobert?

No doubt the draft is key, but three of the last eight champions did not draft their best player.

Going back, Lakers traded for Shaq, Kareem and Pau (I know, I know, Kobe and Magic were better, but I think we are talking about stars needed to win a title), Sixers traded for Moses and Wilt, etc.....

Pretty far cry from "basically every"

Go back to the bad boys pistons and its 10 straight during that era... Shaq was likely the best player on the lakers but it's arguable between him and Kobe. Basically outside the heat team that signed the best player in the league in his prime and the Boston team, but even then was KG the best player or pierce... Rondo also important, so if you limit it to a small sample size to quibble with words then ya you nailed it... The point is the same. The draft is the most important component to building a contender. You have to get lucky or find a dirk curry Kwahi type. Unless we become LA or Miami we have to build through the draft which DL has been good at this far.

The other parts of team building have sucked and he needs to improve or this thing won't work.

I'd pass... If we decide to move favs or Rudy I'd rather get something that allows us to space and be a 4 out type of team. I'm not sure favs can hold down the middle like Rudy can... I'm not sure Rudy can catch and finish enough not to drag the offense down. Some tough choices ahead.

You know Gasol is a really good shooter and one of the best, if not the best, passing big man? He would do more for our spacing than most "stretch 4's".

I thought this would be a slam dunk yes from everyone here. I don't think Memphis would ever do it. Gasol has 4 more years on his deal that are on a very fair price. Basically a flawless fit on this team and would give us the veteran presence we need, improve our passing a ton, and improve our offense a ton. What better way to be the next Memphis than to get the best player from Memphis. We would basically be the new version of Memphis with more talent.
