Punch Bowl Re-Filler
In an unprecedented move, Adam Silver has rescinded the Jazz victory over Houston on March 23rd. GM Daryl Morey had filed the protest on the grounds that Derrick Favors was out of bounds and his basket should not have counted, which would have either sent the game into overtime or given the Rockets a chance to win the game. After reviewing game film, meeting with the officials from the game, and Joe Borgia, NBA Senior Vice President of Replay & Referee Operations, Mr. Silver made the following statement:
"While it is generally the principle of the NBA to let decisions and game results stand, the egregious error made on the night of March 23rd, between two teams ostensibly fighting for the final playoff position in the Western Conference, threatens to impugn the integrity of the league and the reputation of our officials. I have therefore decided to uphold the protest filed on behalf off the Houston Rockets by Daryl Morey. The victory by Utah has therefore been vacated. Since Houston did have a chance to tie or win and missed the final shot, the game is officially suspended as an 85-85 tie. If the outcome of the game will determine playoff composition or seeding, an overtime period will be played in Utah on April 14th, following the season ending game for both teams. If an overtime period is not needed, all stats from the game prior to Mr. Favors' disallowed shot will be recognized by the NBA."
Both Quin Snyder, coach of the Jazz and Dennis Lindsey, their General Manager, declined to comment. Jazz officials are expected to explore avenues to appeal the decision, although legal experts indicate there appear to be no options to do so under NBA bylaws.
