The Donovan Mitchell Hype Thread! (repository of highlights and effusive praise)

Lillard offensively and Mitchell at what he is defensively would be a superstar. Not ready to go there yet. I'm hopefully DM can be a plus defender, able to switch 1-3. Offensively, around 18 pts/per. And he needs to be a 3pt threat given the current makeup of the team.

No reason Mitchell can't be great without hops off one foot, but it will hinder him a bit. He can learn to play within it, obviously he has at the collegiate level and in summer league, but the NBA furreal is a different thing. There have been a lot of great players that played below the rim, and we had 2 of them in Stockton and Hornacek. But their skill sets were much broader and elite in other ways. If Mitchell works on his game, he can improve both this one minor aspect and in other ways to offset it. But being billed an an explosive athletic two-way player the lack of this ability is a detriment and will be exploited against NBA level athletes.

Your wingspan isnt exclusive how long your arms/hands are. Shoulder width plays a huge part in your wingspan.

Yes, that's right. Just saying that if you look at DX's measurement's, DM's standing reach is quite on the low end of similar-height players with long wingspans. He's wider than most, but doesn't seem that much wider relative to his impressive wingspan. But I very well could be wrong in trying to figure out where he "should" be on this measure.

If the measurement is right, I think it's a reminder for the basketball world generally not to be so obsessed with wingspan as the sole measure of length. Standing reach (admittedly more important for Cs and PFs) should be looked at as well. And maybe we (Jazz fans generally) ought recognize that DM is more undersized (for a SG) than we sometimes think when we just refer to his wingspan.

I mean, he is a little shorter than Avery Bradley and his standing reach is a little shorter than Avery Bradley.

Yet his wingspan is nearly 3" longer. As I look at all the guys in the DX database who have an 8'1"-ish standing reach, there are very few that have close to an 6'10" wingspan: George Hill and one or two others. The vast majority at that standing reach sit between 6'4" and 6'7" inch wingspans. Maybe his shoulders are indeed that much wider than almost everyone else. But that's why I'm suspicious of his standing reach measurement.

In any event, we'll just have to see how "long" he plays when he's in actual NBA games.

What if his arms are the exact same length, but he just has broader shoulders and/or lower set shoulders?

I wonder if he'll eventually transition to the 1. Lillard was thought of as a combo-guard when he came in the league and then developed as the primary ball handler. If Mitchell is on the floor with Exum, I could see them trading off running different possessions.

Mitchell is quick and explosive enough that an inch here or there on his reach doesn't make much difference. He gets up and gets his hands in the passing lanes faster than most.

He will play whatever position he wants... Likely tries to win the MVP from every position... sorry I said tries... likely does win the MVP from every position (that's what she said)

CP3 hosting summer workouts for some rookies. Donovan was there, along with Malik Monk, Harry Giles, Elfrid Payton:

I love it that he's working out with some of the best in the league.

Also, here's more from Mitchell playing with Carmelo, JR Smith and others:
