What does Dante get in Free Agency?

When you think that Stockton agreed to play for paltry 14mil/6 years back in 1990 and now we are talking about a scrub ( albeit with potential) getting 4/40 as a bargain it is truly sad where the NBA went with these salaries. Kids don't even need to be good to get paid for life... hey I have size and quick first step, please pay me!

" Stockton's is a six-year contract believed to be worth as much as $14 million.
"This contract is far beyond my wildest dreams," Stockton said. "If you go back to when I first started playing, I could have never imagined that it would come to this. I know that I am fortunate to be playing in the league at this time."

Some of the salaries for role players are ridiculous

On a side note, 14M is still a big chunk of money, more than any person and family would need for the rest of their life. Unless you crave luxuries or other unnecessary things. Which reminds me of Chandler Parsons with his "provide for my family" comments after getting in an argument with SJax about his 100M deal and his role in the firing of Fizdale (btw, at that point he had made a ton of cash already with Dallas). Or the infamous Latrell Sprewell

Well, that's what happens when the salary cap and league earnings go up.

Would you rather the owners pocket all that extra money?

I'm pretty ok with the players getting paid. It ain't my money. I'd rather it go to the players than the owners.

How many unprotected draft picks could we get for Parsons? This year cap space will be overvalued and we could sell high if we got three picks.

Paying Parson's $25M/yr contract for the next two years seems like a really, really, really awful idea.
It would, but with how everyone is valuing picks that they view it as greater than a Mirotic, what would our value on three picks be with some with very little protection (as a hypothetical, not saying Memphis does that)?

I don't know if I would say Exum can't shoot.

Last year he shot 29% from 3, which, is pretty dang bad. Look closer, and pre-all star he shot 27%, post break he shot 34% on a little over 2 attempts a game. Then we go look at summer league, and yeah, we're gonna bring SL stats up, and he's got 41% from 3 on 4 attempts a game. So I think he's showing improvement. He even started to look somewhat comfortable with an off the dribble shot.

We know he can play defense well. We've seen him do it, so we know it's there. You don't just fluke into playing good defense, that doesn't happen.

So you've got a 22 year old, turns 23 in July, who had the flexibility to at least spot play at 3 different positions, will ideally shoot at least 36% from 3, and play good defense...plus he still has the potential, the ability to do more. That guy is gonna get paid more than a few million, by anybody.

I would rather have tickets to the game cost 20$ instead of 100$+, but I get what you are saying. If business math makes sense for owners to pay that much, well, we can't complain I guess.

Man, I wish that too haha. I think those days are long gone though.

SMH. Jazzfanz are worse than Laker fans at times. This infatuation with "potential" of young players that have shown zero potential is plain silly. Exum cannot shoot. Exum is not a great assist guy. His PER is 5.7 and 8.5 in the 2 years he's played. He is injury prone. He sucks *** on defense. His DRtg was tied for dead last last season, with guess who? Fat Boris Diaw. Trey Burke had a better DRtg than Exum in his last season in Utah.

The kid needs to be let go if he wants much more than the vet minimum. "Potential" in almost every case is showcased in the NBA in the very first season. There are a few exceptions but almost everyone who becomes anyone in the NBA shows they have talent in their first season, or maybe the second. Exum hasn't shown jack ****. When will Jazzfanz wise up and realize this simple concept?
This is just frankly an illiterate take on how the NBA works. Nothing more to say.

Basic economics. The league makes a ton more money and so the players get more money. They've collectively bargained to make sure lesser players get more money, and that team control is exchanged for these kinds of deals.

Yeah. This is the missing piece here. Exum was shooting 50% from 3 in preseason though on not many attempts. He may very well be a decent 3 point shooter when all is said and done. The injuries suck, but all that matters is what the Jazz think about his potential. I'm comfortable going with whatever they think since they seem to know what they are doing in regard to development.

You boneheads said the same thing when I didn't want Kanter drafted, or when I said Burks' contract was an albatross, or when I said Haywood would be signed for way more than the $11,000,000 that everyone wanted him at, or when I said Exum wasn't worth wasting a draft pick on. Need I go on? I have a 100% track record and in the end you, QMF, will also start ranting about the same things after the fact that I have been doing before hand for years.

Just Say No to Exum.

I'm not on some weird mission to show I can see the future. Get over yourself lol. You have no clue what is going to happen in the future. Based on what we know now Exum definitely has untapped potential, and will likely get a decent deal. NBA players generally get deals that line up more with what the team thinks they will do as opposed to what they have done. Context matters. The Jazz will decide having much more info than you about Dante.

I wouldn't call ~3M substantially less, especially on NBA numbers
Yeah, I get that. I guess I was viewing it as 10% less... and if a lot of your contracts are 10% more than they need to be, you're in a world of hurt.

Anyway, it only takes one dumb GM using all his MLE to raise his value close to 40M. But yeah, from the Jazz perspective a fair value IMO is around 36-40M/4 years with either injury clauses or a team option.

I'd actually be quite shocked if any GM gives Exum an offer as high as the MLE. So I think Exum's value is quite a bit less than that. But I guess we'll see.

Context does matter. Exum sucks. Any high $ contract he signs will be a cap killer to any team and should be grounds for a GM firing. Anyone saying he should be locked in at $40/4 isn't worth talking to. I will personally quit rooting for the Jazz and become a Lakers fan if they do anything close to that stupid.

i never was impressed with exum. I made tons of posts against drafting him. I still try to think about his upsides, but I think the kid is going right down the greg oden path. I think he's not going to get much of an offer in the off-season. I think the jazz bring him back cheap and try to resurrect the project.

being injury prone is a real thing and exum is very much injury prone.

Do they now? Was Exum offered a contract yet?
Did you read where he said "seem to" ? ie going by all available indications. Everyone just chill out and wait & see.
