Top 5 Targets for Summer 2018

Agree on Thabo and Crowder, but Royce won't really help us much at the 4 even if he rebounds well. Spot minutes at best.

If we want to keep defenses from dropping their 4 into the lane to double Mitchell for the foreseeable future, we have got to locate a big that can shoot. I'm still hopeful the Jazz can pry Mirotic away.

I haven't given up on Niko yet either. I think Royce is a good enough shooter to provide space... I also want to see what he can do as a ball handler/passer attacking close outs. He's been turnover prone but has showed some playmaking ability at times and when he was in Europe. Give him another year to get comfortable.

My list which only includes free agents and trades:

1. Tobias Harris: I think he fits what we need perfectly for now and the long haul. He is a scorer from PF/SF and not a liability on defense. He is on an expiring deal so I think a starting offer of Burks, our 1st and 2 2nd rounders would be a solid first offer. Probably doesn't do it, but it's a good first effort. The Clippers should probably look to sell off assets and rebuild. Williams, Jordan, Gallinari and Harris aren't taking them anywhere anytime soon. #21 could be packaged with #12 and/or #14 to get LA higher into the lottery.

2. Herzonja: Offensively, he can be what we need off the bench and he's an unrestricted free agent with something prove. He has the physical tools to be a force on both ends. Maybe he has been a wasted talent in Orlando like Oladipo was. He is my main free agent target.

3. Wes Matthews: Dallas is rebuilding and Wes is most valuable at this stage in his career as a vet role player. His presence in our 2nd unit would be massive. He is a good switching defender and can shoot the 3. I think Burks, a non-guaranteed like Udoh and a 2nd or 2 would get it done. Dallas would shed some cap space to maybe target a young guy like Parker to overpay.

4. Ilyasova: he is an unrestricted stretch 4. The guy addresses so many of our needs without being a huge liability on defense. And he shouldn't cost that much either. Great alternative to Favors should he leave.

5. DeMarre Carroll: he would be an excellent addition. The Nets of course don't have their first round pick (to Cavs) and Carroll is an expiring. I think we could tempt them with a trade of Burks and our 1st (#21) for Carroll and the 1st Brooklyn has from Toronto (#29).

On Wes... he apparently fractured his leg. I didn't know that. I'd rather just keep Thabo than pick him up.

I think the Carroll deal is doable... I'd want a swap of 52, 40. Also, we have the 21st pick this year just an FYI. BKN may want to clear some cap space because they could offer Parker like $20M if they can clear another $5M... there may be other dudes that are gettable.

Don't get me wrong on Royce. I love what he brings. He reminds me a bit of Bruce Bowen.

Matthews did fracture his leg, but that happened in March. He should be fine for next year. His contract expires in 2019, but I think he would be a massive upgrade over Burks for our lineup. If it only costs us a few million in cap space and a 2nd rounder or 2, I think it's worth it.

Carroll for a package of #21 and #52 for #29 and either #40 or #45 is pretty fair for both sides.

Thanks for reminding me we ended up with #21.

Yeah I wasn't doubting your Royce love. I just think there is more there that will be uncovered. On defense he can guard 1-4 and holds his own on the glass. I wouldn't want him there full time but 10-15 minutes a night I think he could thrive.

We've really only seen his rebounding, defense, and spot up shooting. He can do more.

I just think I'd much rather have AB and Thabo than Matthews... I'd want their second rounder in that case. Thabo is better in his role than Matthews will be in his imo and both have age/injury concerns.

1. Durant
2. Paul George
3. Aaron Gordon if it's a reasonable price
4. Jabari if it's a reasonable price

That's it's for free agents otherwise keep our guys.

I'm sure there are some trades I would do but within reason I have no idea who will actually be available.

I think we could do the AB for DMC deal straight up... no pick swap. It clears 3.9M in cap space for them. Maybe we send a 2019 second. It works for us because we could waive Thabo's 5.5M... then you have essentially traded Thabo at 5.5 for DMC at 3.9.

But why does Brooklyn do that deal without incentive? Carroll + $3.9 is much more valuable to a team that wants to win than Burks - $3.9.

If anything, we offer Jerekbo, Thabo and Udoh for Carroll. Then Brooklyn saves like $10 million since all 3 are non-guaranteed. In that scenario, we might even get one of those 2nd rounders (#40 or #45).

They are close to enough space to get in the Jabari and Zach Lavine conversations. They'd obviously prefer to dump the entire salary, but moving 3.9 of it is helpful. They also own their own pick so I'm not sure they want to be good next year AB helps with that.

They could stretch AB (their cap situation gets tricky next year) or we could send cash with the trade and they buyout AB at an amount lower than 11.5... which would lower his cap number.

The original deal of AB, 21, 52 for DMC 29, 40 is likely pretty fair. DMC > Thabo next year and there would be a net savings once we released Thabo and possibly Jerebko. DMC would be a great small ball 4 for us. AB is a wasted roster spot if we never trust him.

Here’s my thinking. We often carried four point guards in the past and with injuries to Rubio being relatively often, carrying four (or three and a combo like Exum, who also has an injury history) isn’t an issue. Having said that, I’d re-sign Neto super cheap. You could do worse as a 3rd/4th point guard.

If we can do that, I would then very strongly consider going after Bruno Caboclo. He’s a RFA which could pose an issue but I’m not sure the Kings are very interested in matching him. So I would make him 3-4 year relatively cheap offer. No one has money anyway and I feel like most teams won’t spend it on him. Dude has crazy potential and has had bad situations. And with a fellow Brazilian here and our staff, I think we could get him to flourish. He’s still very raw but has great basic skills, athleticism and shoots free throws well which is often the indicator for shooting 3’s.
And he’s still damn young.

Do those two moves, maybe sign Pachulia to a 1-2 year deal as a legit backup 5 til Bradley’s ready and then go after BPA in the draft and I think we’d be pretty set.

Keep Favors and get Aaron Gordon or Mirotic. I think everybody in this team would be better next year. Only PF have to be improved.

Carroll would be fantastic for us. I would prefer Tobias Harris, but I can't think of a better one year target. Low risk, potential high reward.

And I like using Jerekbo, Udoh and Thabo to do it. I really think Brooklyn would have to give us an asset if we presented that option to them. #29 could potentially be in play if we gave them the chance to shed $10+. We would probably have to add a couple 2nd rounders to discuss #29.

DMC is a 39% spot up three point shooter... Jae had a down year and is at 34%. DMC more of a ball mover the Jae. If you started DMC could bring Jae off the bench and I think both guys would be good in their roles. DMC and Quin have a relationship from Atlanta ( I think).

Just not sure I'd want to drop 8 spots in the draft... guys like Evans, Musa, Thomas will be gone. Might just do all the unguaranteed guys for DMC and take #40.

On Ellington... they are hamstrung and he is older a 1 + 1 at the MLE may get it done. I think they are limited in what they can offer him. I'd be hesitant to go more than that since he's a little older.

I can see plenty of capped-out teams using their mid-level to sign a vet like him this off-season. At his age, a team offering an extra year will probably get him (maybe he end up getting 3 years)

Very good points. He would be such an asset for us.
