Following Potential 2018 Draftees

Doncic has that weird athletic trait that is hard to appreciate because it doesn't look 'athletic'. I think there was a piece on it about Harden a while ago - the ability to decelerate/stop on a dime and with full control in short spaces. This is why all his step backs leave him completely open. It's quite impressive. The first time he does it, you think - oh that's probably just bad defense, but then he does it again and again and again and every single time he has like 5+ feet of space to shoot it uninterrupted. I would want to see him do it against NBA level athletes and defenders but it looks extremely impressive at this level.

He's going 2nd to the Kings. Theyll give him plenty of minutes right away

Regarding Josh Hart. After the draft last year, David Locke said that if Utah stayed put at 24, they were taking Tony Bradley or Josh Hart. Wonder if they went with Bradley because they already drafted a backcourt player in Mitchell. I think they still would have went with Bradley. They seemed pretty smitten with him.

I missed the scrimmage today. How did Bowen look?

It sounded like they had Bradley rated higher - especially since they traded up to get him. Apparently they had him rated in the top 20 last year. Hopefully he lives up to that once he matures. Jazz are playing the long game with him for sure.

There is no way Donte is the 21st or high player on the board.

Did I say he was? Did I say I wouldn’t take him at 21? I clearly said I would like to get a later pick to get him and I don’t think we should take him at 21.

I’m simply saying if the jazz get another pick... say #31... and Donte is on their board... they won’t pass him up because they decided not to draft josh hart. Your whole thing of “why would they pick Donte if they passed on Hart” is dumb... it isn’t a factor at all.

They are different players and none of us know where he fits on their board. I would have thought Semi, Hart and others were higher than TB because of positional scarcity but I was wrong.

I really don't expect the Jazz to be drafting at 21 if at all in the first round. Keep in mind the Jazz have not drafted where they were expected to in 3 of the last 5 years. The Jazz will take a hard look at their
shortcomings vs the Rockets and act accordingly. I think it is pretty clear that Gobert is not going to develop offensively much more than he already has. If the Jazz are building around Gobert, Mitchell, and Rubio then they need to go get another big who can score. There were too many dry spells offensively against a team like the Rockets. The Jazz need to put all their resources into that effort including the 21.

It doesn't even have to a true big, a long 6'7" or 6'8" player is acceptable at PF nowadays.
If you look at some of the recent 6'10" "stretch" PFs that have been drafted on that potential, they have not impressed or seen much court time. Perhaps they are unplayable due to their lack of ball handling and footspeed.
It's a guard and wings league.

Trey Lyles, 6'10", poor defense still holding him to backup PF minutes.
Henry Ellenson, 6'10", slow, doesn't look promising
Noah Vonleh, 6'9", bust
Adriene Payne, 6'10" bust
T.J.Leaf, 6'10" not a good first year

I am almost to the point of betting Doncic goes to the suns. Guards and wings are more important in the NBA than centers. Especially centers that are great at defense.

Doncic, Booker, Jackson and Warren are good foundation peices. The sins have money this summer to go out and offer or over pay for a center. They could offer the max to capela or steal favors from the jazz. If they felt so inclined they could offer a Max to cousins.

A pretty solid argument can be made that Jaren Jackson Jr. is a better shooter and better rim protector than Ayton. Ayton may be a better scorer in the post and mid-range, but even this may not be entirely clear cut or may not stay that way longer term. Jackson might also be a better roll-man and will also run the floor in transition and in transition defense. Ayton is a very impressive player, but he's not a clear-cut #1 pick to me, given the way the game has been evolving.

I'd take Ayton ahead of Bagley and probably Bamba though.

I live in Sacramento and surprised Kings fans seem to be pro Ayton. Someone was like what is this Doncic kid gonna be... I told them imagine if James Harden was fun as hell... something like that.

Guards, guards, guards. A bunch of guards in our range: Simons, J. Robinson, K. Thomas, Okogie, Shamet, Trent Jr., Okobo

Spellman is an interesting player to me in the late first early second round. He reminds me of PJ Tucker or a longer more athletic Mo Spates. A dude who could come in, get some rebounds, and bomb away from deep.

Listening to Ryan McDonogh....they had a plan, acquired a bunch of assets, developerd several young players and now they have a stellar head coach and the number one pick.

I hate to criticize my Jazz, but they made a number of mistakes 2011-2017, and now the asset cupboard is kind of empty.

Lol what? In that time frame the Suns have drafted Len, Bender, and Chriss. They’ve been complete *** since Hornacek’s second year as coach (and were supposed to be **** his first year). And only now will they have something that might resemble a good team in a few years. And their ‘stellar head coach’ is our ****ing guy!

While the Jazz have been in the hunt or the playoffs every year except one since then, have two players better than anyone on Phoenix, and are solidly in the NBA’s second tier with a super bright future.

And yet the Suns are the standard every team should aspire too? Please retract this dumb statement.

FWIW, I think Allen will be in the league for a long time. Not advocating him for the Jazz (yet) but he is a player.

He's good, guys. Shot 36% on 3s with over 5 attempts per game. Great hands. Grabbed almost 9 rpg, plus 1.6 bpg. He'd give us more shooting while keeping defensive length on the perimeter. Now he's likely to rise out of our range.
