The president has the most visible soapbox in the country. And our media, regardless of their bias, makes sure television viewers hear what the president has to say. Does he have the right to demonize the free press? The opposition party? The president claims the media is the enemy of the people, and that the media is just that because they are telling lies about him. But, if instead, they are telling the truth in simply pointing out his lies, then why should they not point out that calling the media the enemy of the people is demonizing the institution that monitors the words and behavior of our political leaders?
How is what the president is doing not a part of creating a Post Truth landscape in which large segments of the electorate will simply believe in lies and propaganda? And, in doing that to our democratic institutions, like a free press, like the opposition party, is that similar to crying fire in a crowded theater? If the president is a pathological liar, and creating an alternate reality in which the press and opposition party are enemies of America, how else can we combat that other then by pointing out again, and again, and again that that is exactly what he is doing? And if we see an uptick in violence perpetrated by white nationalists, how do we address the fact that the president of the United States seems to encourage white nationalist groups by means of his rhetoric? By simply pointing out that this is happening, we are somehow guilty of infringing on rights? Or are we instead pointing out that our president is in fact crying fire in a crowded theater?
