Democracy after Trump

I’ve been reflecting on a few books I’ve read lately:

Fascism (Madeline Albright)
blah blah blah hur dudur derp blah durp herp

if yu want to learn about fascism read the books of its actual founder giovani gentilli. not some stupid ***** 50-80 years later view on it. because those views are wrong

side note: why the f is bitch not censored. trying to get me banned again. had to self censor

Just finished reading "How Democracies Die". I think it should be required reading for everyone.

Disturbing stuff really, as far as how fragile they paint American Democracy.

But what struck me is the discussion of the demographic change that is shaping our politics. As the Republican party represents, and courts, the shrinking white working class, it clings to power with ever more desperate tactics, gerrymandering, voter suppression, legislative overreach, court packing, executive fiat, etc. The recommendation from the authors was for the Democrats, representing a growing minority soon to be majority non white electorate, return to status quo ante norms of restraint and respect. They warn against reciprocal use of political hard ball, as being counter productive. I don't know what the answer might be, but I don't hold out much hope that a one sided call for decency and decorum will change the polity and save democracy. Addressing racism and wealth inequality will be more messy than the gentleman's game of civil politics when one side is entrenched and dedicated to winning at all costs.

Thanks to you and @The Thriller for recommending this!

@The Thriller gets a lot of flak at times for his focus on Republicans undermining our democratic institutions, and, in this instance suggesting we need worry about the Republican Party, in the long run, every bit as much as the rather singular mind**** that is Donald Trump. Well, in this instance, he's right, no matter how many times we hear the mantra "both parties are to blame". Well, yeah, neoliberalism is a b****, and both parties promote it, but if we keep up crap like this, then we'll just sleepwalk our way right into a single party state. This is what hyperpartisanship has wrought...

This world keeps getting weirder.

Unexpected, but then I don't really know the man, but he's right. Good on him.

"The unequivocal support for the president by his followers was a big concern, Bundy said, and a factor in his decision to step away from the movement.

"Those on the right have been so fanatically loyal to him that any word of opposition to bring out light in what he might be doing that is incorrect draws hate," Bundy said.

He then took it a step further, comparing the support of Trump's base to that of Adolf Hitler's.

"The time we find ourselves in now that is closest found in history is Germany in the 1930s, and they had a leader that was loved, and it was the same kind of following," he said. "I don't want to say there is that extreme similarity, but it very well could go that way, and people just give up their thinking, their rights, and they give up their government because they were so willing to follow him."

Since our team is struggling, I thought I would head over to different areas to see what's going on. Good Lord, we have some freaking delusional people out there.

Just my two cents....
- both political parties are corrupt so don't try the all high and mighty from either side.

- both parties do their best to rig elections. Whether it's voter suppression or registering dead people, it's wrong.

- race relations have been an issue long before Trump. He doesn't help things but also the media slants everything negative anyway. The guy could cure cancer but the media would say he only wanted to cure it for white people. The media sucks.

- if people want to complain about global warming, don't drive your car. Once you stop that, I can take you seriously.

I'd like to get into more, but I know I'm wasting my time for anyone wanting to be objective anyway.

I don't recall the Democratic party pulling these specific moves before, meaning what's happening in Wisconsin and Michigan specifically, and it doesnt strike me as any kind of good trend. It does seem to be a way to dulute election results after the fact. We've had two major political parties for a long time know. In elections, it's always been "win some, lose some". Isn't this new development, just that, new, and how is pointing it out being high and mighty?

Doesn't this lead to "my vote does not count anyway" being irrefutably true, and, if so, how is that good for our democracy? Are you saying this is to be ignored, or not raised at all, because both parties have pulled crap before?

How do I know you're not just a Republican voter, attempting to sweep this under the rug under the guise of the "both parties" mantra? (And I am a Democratic supporter in the Trump era, trying to focus light on this by bringing it out from under the rug where some would sweep it.)

"Both national and statewide experts said they had never seen such efforts like the ones in Wisconsin and Michigan before — and that the GOP actions indicate a new level of toxicity has arrived in state government.

"Until recently, no party has tried to hamstring their opponents' future power to the way the Republicans are doing it now," John Chamberlin, professor emeritus of political science and public policy at the University of Michigan, told NBC News, adding, "They are a bad sign that state politics is being infected by the toxic national political environment."

I don't know what you mean.

Of course I'm a real person who has lived all over the country. I have lived in blue areas and red areas. One thing I've learned is that voters are pawns that each party does their best to manipulate.

.... got it. Thanks

I think we should point out specific things that each party does that are not okay.

I think we should NOT ignore things that one party does that are not okay because the other party also does things that are not okay.

This logical fallacy of "yeah but it doesn't matter because both parties suck" needs a name. Or does it already have one?

Democrats are just as corrupt as Republicans. In TN, the left has been registering dead voters for years. And that's in addition to promising stuff to local communities just so they can ship them to polling stations the day of voting. It's pretty despicable.

Speaking of corruption, just look at this whole Russia thing. So, some Russian special intelligence person hacks into the Democratic National Convention messages and exposes their corruption. In the messages, there are clear conversations about how the DNC colluded against Bernie, paid people to start fights at Trump rallies and more. Since Trump got elected, all the media left and Democrats want to do is link Trump to the hacking Russians rather than talk about how messed up it is that the DNC colluded against Bernie, tried to mess up Trump rallies, etc.

It's so stupid yet people are dumb. Biased people are even dumber (and that goes for both sides). But for the left to be so outraged at Trump maybe being involved with Russians who exposed the DNC dark secrets is just laughable. It's about as bad as D'Angelo Russell being the bad guy because he leaked that his teammate was cheating on his girlfriend/wife. If you weren't a scumbag cheating on your girlfriend/wife, it wouldn't be a story to begin with. Take responsibility for your actions, get better and move on.

I'd need to see a citation on this happening any time recently. Yes, these were common tactics about 100 years ago, but not this century.

@LoPo
You can play the both parties card all you like but do both parties presidents and their candidates act like Trump does? Do both parties presidents tweet all day long and act like weirdos every time they get in front of a camera? Do both parties presidents have job resumes that with no political experience and having the TV show The Apprentice on it? Do both parties presidents have catch phrases like "your fired"?

LeBron and Raul neto are both NBA basketball player so since they have that in common they are the same obviously. Just like both parties do some ****ed up **** sometimes so they are the same too. Doesn't matter that LeBron is a much better basketball player than neto and doesn't matter that one party does worse **** more frequently than the other. They are all the same right?

I'd like to get into more, but I know I'm wasting my time hoping you would be objective anyway.

Always nice when the sports dummies come over to this forum and prove themselves to be regular dummies as well.

I'm not trying to play the card; I was just stating the obvious.

I can't stand how Trump acts. He acts like a pompous jerk. I was shocked that he got elected and even more shocked that he hasn't been more intentional about acting presidential.

At the end of the day, I want my president to do his job. I want him to help create the policies which allow more Americans to be successful. I want him to help create a country that more people can make a living and support their families. Sure Trump is a jackass and he embarrasses us through his tweets and mannerisms, but I don't rate his job on those things. I rate his job on the economy, if we aren't at war with any other country, how much I bring home each month, etc. Those are the things that really matter to me.

Please elaborate or are you just taking the media stance of making fun of somebody instead of talking about the things that really matter?

I think the exposure of the way the DNC jobbed Bernie is a HUGE reason why Trump got elected. There were many people who might normally side with the Democrats, or independent voters who otherwise would have voted for Hillary over Trump, but that scandal either kept them from voting or led them to hold their nose and vote for Trump. I knew MANY MANY people who said they just couldn't vote for Hillary because of how corrupt she is. Please don't act like nobody noticed, Trump got ****ing elected and he's a steaming pile of ****.

Exactly. And it's funny you say that.

My college roommate's Dad was in the secret service assigned to Mrs. Clinton. The Dad said he would never in a million years vote for Hillary Clinton. He said the things he saw and the level of her power hungry corruption made him sick.

So when everything was leaked about Bernie, the Trump rally stuff, etc., he was not shocked one bit. And Hillary being Hillary cost her an election she should have won going away.
