Jazz - Nuggets: Round 1

Murray isn't that good? Are you serious? Dude is an absolute gamer and has earned the title of being a jazz killer of this generation. He joins the likes of Michael Redd, Eddie Johnson, Michael Finley, Peja... who else am I missing?
He's very good... sorry he isn't as good as he shot yesterday though... that is what I meant. He won't continue to shoot 65% from the field and 67% from three. He was on a heater yesterday. He shoots 46/35 for the season. The nuggets just had their best shooting performance of the playoffs and needed overtime to beat us. We got an all time performance from DM but everyone else was kinda meh (except Joe).

The thing about DM's performance was that he was 6/15 from 3... I can see him doing that again. Was 8/10 at the rim and 100% from the line... that might not be sustainable, but I think he can average 35 pts per the rest of the series (so not including game 1). His performance is easier to duplicate than Murray's imo.

At the end of the game I don't care... can't take em home with you.

This. Throw Royce on him. Or Mitchell even. And I don’t want to hear we needed Mitchell on offense. Guys can play elite both ways. Ingles wasn’t working and doesn’t make as much sense.

Mike is back! Win game 2 and then all of the pressure goes to Denver with the confidence boosting of the Jazz evening the series and getting Mike back for Game 3.

That's exactly the argument you would expect from someone whose primary focus is on the offensive side of the floor. Gobert can absolutely take over game by shutting down the opponents offense.

This season, I haven't seen it. He's been awesome, but he isn't shutting down the opponents offense. He makes them change the way they want to play, but great teams still find a way to eat both our team defense and Rudy apart.

I think the mystique of Rudy has taken a step back. Does he need that many defenders to be truly special? Of course it makes everybody better defensively when everybody is a good defender, but that's just not going to be realistic when we're paying Conley $35 next year and Rudy is hoping to sign a +max deal.

My primary focus is winning and think that is done with a lineup of switchable defenders who can hit open shots more than rim protectors who have no range.

Anecdotal, but was listening to Zach Lowe and some other guy on his pod going over each series. And for ours, the other guy said something about how it just doesn't feel the same around the rim with Gobert. Specifically mentioned the OKC bubble game where SGA went at him like he didn't even know who he was.

Obviously that is just one bad game. But I think the sentiment has some truth to it. We ask Rudy to do a ton of defense, I understand that. But I think even Jazz fans would say it wasn't as dominant of a season defensively for Gobert. No one even bothered making the DPOY case for him this year, I think we all felt it.

I’ve heard some people in the national media say that Gobert has a case for DPOY again. And many of them list him as a clear #2 after Giannis. But his effort was uneven this year; and I think we all felt that he might’ve reached his ceiling already, which has a strong effect on enthusiasm.

Nah, he had grandpa Joe guarding him. If he would have had Mitchell on him it would have been a different situation.

Good post. Gobert should definitely be a top 5 DPOY candidate despite not being as dominant as the past couple years.

And I don't think his dominance slipped due to his decline, but more of roster change. When everybody is a good defender, it makes the best defender look that much better.

Lastly - I think he is what he is. I don't believe he is going to improve. We either put great defenders around him or we watch him shutdown bad teams or just shutdown plays here and there (like Game 1). I think giving him the max is a really, really bad idea at this point. There is no way whatsoever we can change our roster into a bunch of stud wing defenders with the decision we made last summer. Bojan, Conley, Clarkson and Mitchell are probably here to stay. All of them are slightly above average to bad defenders.

Even in the few games I have seen, I have.

Great teams also find a way to limit the offense of their opponents best players. That's why they are great teams.

Are you saying we're a great team? I don't think we are. I also don't think Gobert is our only hope. I think we are good enough to change ourselves around Donovan to compete even more seriously. All the narrative has been "we need this around Rudy" or "we need that around Rudy". I think we need to start building a future around Don.
