What's new

Rudy Gobert 5 years, $205M

If Rudy had taken less than the max, I would admire his loyalty. He took more money than anybody else could even give.

He took the most money. Loyalty isn't really worth debating. He took the most money so nobody can claim he is more loyal.

He could have also become an UFA and leave. It seems he likes it here and if he can make a bit more money from it, voilá. Glad he is staying.

If we can get something better, I'm all for it.

Our roster is 99% set. I'd say the only thing worth monitoring is Conley. Will be interesting to see how Don does as primary ball handler and Conley as spot up shooter. If Conley doesn't seem completely essential, we have to use his contract to either avoid the luxury or improve the roster.

Yeah, I like Conley but it's not the best use of cap space to have someone spot up most of the time. Let's see how much he has the ball in his hands and how the team rolls.

Well Rudy has enough money to buy a French Island somewhere. I hope DL and JZ know what they're doing. The consensus on Realgm ranges from "awful" to "worst contract in the league".
Anyone who values scoring as the primary talent to have will agree.

I'm glad he's staying too regardless of my thoughts on the contract. I like Rudy.

Just don't sing me some song praising his loyalty when he took more money than anybody else could give him. It was an easy decision for him.

Yeah I mean his case is very similar to Ed, Dante, TB.

I promise you multiple front offices are saying “****... another guy is off the market”. One of them might be our major worry in the next few years if Luka continues to improve.

I literally might do a cartwheel today I’m happy. This deal means we get some good basketball next 3-4 years. Every team has to rebuild sometime. We will hit that part of the cycle at some point... enjoy the good times while they last.
Sarcasm, bruh. Sarcasm.

Rudy was eligible and his play made him eligible for a $244 million super max. He took $39 million less than he qualified for. Whether you think he is worth that or not his play qualified him for it. This is the most loyal a player has been since Stockton and Malone. Fighting the franchise over a PO on your rookie scale extension, and never even saying “thank you” publicly is not.

There's just something cool about drafting a player, developing him, watching him turn into an all star and all NBA player and then having him choose to re-sign with your small market team when he has the chance to become an unrestricted free agent and sign wherever he wants. After losing Deron and Haywood, this just feels really good.

Just had to explain to multiple friends how the salary cap works.

Apparently we could have let Conley and Gobert walk and had 60M in cap space to sign players!!!

Sadly, I still don’t think people on this board understand it either. In that scenario we have 15M and are a worse team no matter who we sign.

What he did deserves appreciation but not celebration. He took less than the utmost max but more than anybody else could give. I don't think loyalty is the word I would use.

Manu and Duncan taking bargain deals for years is loyalty. Taking more than any other team can give is simply not loyalty.

How about getting a super max clause for 3rd All NBA team, getting a trade kicker, and then fighting the franchise that traded up to draft you, developed you, put you in a winning situation, and helped you become the amazing successful player you became over a player option, and then never once publicly thanking the organization, fanbase, or those who have supported you for the first 4 years of your career? You sure seem to think that of the guy who never even publicly acknowledged the contract he was given by the franchise that drafted and developed him. Nor can he find the decency to even congratulate the teammate who’s been most responsible to the wins attached to his career.

Hey I'm trying to maintain my head in the sand over here about Donny's being a Utah Jazz lifer, you're not helping!

Donovan is gone already so start preparing yourself for it. If you can’t see his total change in how he acts towards the fanbase/being here you’re being willfully naive. A lot of it was the social media comments on social justice issues IMO, but the dude couldn’t even acknowledge the contract he was given. Hasn’t said a positive thing about being here in 9 months, and is just playing along for the time he is forced to. Appreciate Rudy. Cause the other guy is going to let you down.

Imagine getting $195 million, a franchise that did everything to help you be successful, and never even saying “thank you” publicly lol.

Then imagine the teammate most responsible aside from yourself for the wins attached to your career re-signing and you being the “face of the franchise” and being one of the only teammates to not publicly acknowledge or say “congrats” after all that happened between you two the past 9 months.

Appreciate Rudy, and come to reality with the other guy.

If I'm reading the NBA's stats page right, Rudy was +26 in the series, so I'm not convinced he was actually outplayed.

We lost cuz we had no one who could stop Murray on the perimeter. Rudy and Joker pretty much cancelled each other out. Rudy was actually the key for us to stay in it during G7. Jokic did destroy the clippers in the second round though.
