For 4 years Trump used rhetoric, and spoke with an attitude, that would nurture and grow the emotion of anger in his followers. There were incidents, hate crimes, loners and mail bombs, Proud Boys.

But January 6th brought the point home: This is what we mean when we say words matter.

This is what you can bring forth from people. This is what words can unleash. This is what demagogues are good at. This is why such people should never attain high power. They do not bring out the best in people. They appeal to our baser instincts, our darker angels.

On January 6, 2021, we saw what Big Lies and hateful rhetoric creates. It was shocking to witness, but not only was it not surprising, it could be anticipated as a real possibility when you use words to hateful effect, and craft Big Lies, to be intoned incessantly.

With anger and grievance at their core. For all 4 years.

And then, in the moment, direct them to a crowd looking for a fight, use them to followers themselves consumed by the anger and grievance Trump helped incubate and call forth.

This is not a president. This is a cult of personality. This is a field day for social scientists forever.

History shows us when you elect leaders who appeal to people’s baser instincts, bad things happen. Ugly things happen. In a manner inherently damaging to the society in question.

It takes a breeding ground to spit out a demagogue like Trump, but don’t get me going on what all this says about Americans. Suffice to say, we need to talk. And deprogram.

But only truth can really be offered effectively to cult members. And that will be a long time coming, unless Trump helps by exposing his own Big Lie. They’re entitled to nutty beliefs, but fighting in support of a Big Lie, in this case “massive election fraud”, and “stop the steal”, will not reverse the election, and will be crushed. If need be. And it may need be. Sorry state of affairs.

My neighbor is at my house right now talking politics with my wife (I am just playing fetch with my dog instead and staying out of the conversation) and he just said to her "they have already shown that antifa is the ones responsible for the attack on the capital. There is proof everywhere"

Attempts to “both sides” this by “whatabouting” BLM is lazy at best and incredibly malicious at worst. None of those protests for civil rights can compare with insurrection at the nation’s capital incited by the POTUS to overthrow the election. The weaponry, the organization, the characters involved (the president and members of Congress), and the sheer boldness isn’t apples to apples. But when “you’re not alt right”, I’m sure looking at the two looks the same.

To the rest of us, Jan 6 was the ugliest day in our country since 9/11. And honestly, in the long term, might be more destructive to our democracy domestically and American hegemony worldwide.

so Trump supporters have been planning violence since they lost the election. Trump encouraged them to march down to the Capital. After the attack began and the Trumpsters did not achieve what they wanted what do they do? They blame antifa and try to point the finger at BLM so not only are they terrorist and traitors but cowards because they tried to frame another group. Historically, White criminals when caught always try to blame it on a black person. Comparing BLM to these traitors is like comparing a bowling ball to an orange. Nah, I'm referring to specific people with an extremist position. I don't think the protesters from over last summer represent a certain political party.

I think you think you know my thoughts but I'm certain you don't.

Maybe my position and viewpoints are a minority. I'm ok with that because many people's opinions on the matter are influenced by their political party.

I’m glad more and more people are seeing him for what he is. Pretty sure I was the first here to call him out on his ****. “I’m not alt right I’m not alt right!” Yet, he takes their position every ****ing time. He plays footsies with the worst people in our society but tries to disguise it with his lame whataboutisms, both sides, and “I’m just asking questions” routine. The media he consumes from Shapiro, Ngo, etc is just rotting out his brian.

His schtick is so played out.

BTW both sides aren’t responsible for what happened this past week. Increasingly we’re seeing the right react with violence and is becoming more and more embracing of authoritarianism. They’re living in an alt reality
