Jazz Offseason Plan

I am interested in deals with desperate teams with younger or prime-age long, athletic guards and wings that are desperate to move up just another level. I loved the Favs and 30 for Delon Wright and an early second (we’re we could nab a Herb Jones).

Charlotte has some good young-uns that might fit the description. If we could flip Bogey for a promising young, long athletic player and take on a usable but “meh” vet too to match salaries, I’d be interested.

Do we have anything Portland might want for RoCo? Sort of doubt it. They are like us and need more defense, not less.

What teams are desperately in need of shooting and scoring that have young long athletic players they might be willing to give up?

No, because somehow you think you can throw in Theis in the center rotation and be fine. They would be absolutely hideous on D.
Fine isn't good and isn't elite. But center play is the least important position on the floor. As long as we can adequately address an Embiid should we face them, I think we could concentrate elsewhere if we had Theis, Doke and Favors.

Let me guess....everything you know about basketball, you've learned on NBA2K?

In the land of reality, this is how you get Dame Lillard:

#1 Mike Conley wants to go to a team that doesn't have cap space. We trade him and get draft assets.

#2 We add a decent vet or two with our exceptions.

#3 After free agency, Dame demands a trade and we are on his list of preferred destinations.

#4 We pull off a 3 team deal where Rudy goes to a third team, Dame comes to us, and the assets from the third team and the Conley deal go to Portland.

Note: Bojan or Clarkson might also be included in the Dame deal or their own deals to address defense elsewhere on the roster.

The whole thing is built around Dame and Don with quality role players around. Like an improved version of Phoenix.

Do we get a #1 overall pick to draft ayton to replace Rudy too?

No, I give ‘em credit for taking a risk and trying something new.

The reality is, we struggled against top teams at full strength

Isn't trading for Mike conley trying something new? How often have we traded for players of his caliber? Do you give us credit for trying that or only other teams?

The reality is that we were literally the number 1 team in the league against the top 10 teams in the league this past season.

That was now multiple offseasons ago, but I’ve not criticized the Conley deal. I hope he stays, but even if he doesn’t, we still won that trade unless the Grizzlies pick next year turns into an All-Star.

It really wasn’t much of a risk. We got an All-Star level player for two late firsts and a couple rotation level players. Even if he leaves, the downside risk wasn’t that great at the time and isn’t much now. We’ll just pivot and move things around and still be a non-contending playoff team. If he stays, we might contend if we can surround him, Don, and Rudy with the right dudes.

It was a pretty safe trade because we likely didn’t give up much of anything of actual value.

I don’t see a Bogey, Ingles, or Clarkson trade being that risky of a move either, because I don’t think moving any one of those guys individually is going to impact winning much (especially Bogey) if we return the Don/Rudy/Mike core.

I like how people say we wouldn’t make the playoffs without Rudy like that is such a bonafide fact.

Our entire defensive scheme revolves around funneling players to Rudy. We wouldn’t keep the same scheme lmao. If you replaced Rudy with say a Capela or Turner and we had Tucker and Crowder or players like that we’d be a title contender.

Dame
Mitchell
Crowder
Tucker
Capela

Royce and Ingles off the bench.

Explain to me how that wouldn’t work.

WTF.......why would we stop there? Let's add Kawhi, KD, and Jimmy Butler.

I’m not saying it’s realistic I am just saying you replace Rudy with someone like Capela or Turner and get wing defenders in his place and we’d be fine.

You’d have to get good defensive players at multiple positions back in the trade (or otherwise added to roster) to make it work.

Moving Rudy for a high salary, offense first player and keeping the rest of the current roster largely intact would be an outright disaster. You’d have to rework the whole roster to move Rudy and it not make us awful.

Instead, imagine how good Rudy would look on defense with some competent defenders in the rotation. That better positions us for playoff success next year, and also goes partway towards restructuring the roster and preparing for the post-Rudy roster if we move him in the future.

This is not popular, but I’d actually bring back Georges as insurance for his cheap elite 3 pt shooting (he is a cheap piece with an elite skill that helps with roster versatility) and move at least one of Ingles or Bojan (the more expensive guys with useful offensive skills and trade value but limited athleticism) or Clarkson for starting caliber perimeter defense. I may move two of them if I strike out in signing a rotation level perimeter defender/small ball center with the mini-MLE.

Then you add your Torrey Craigs and a new batch of developmental guys that fit the 3&D archetype and hope you hit for injury insurance.

No way you are getting DL without Rudy and every other asset. You aren't getting DL and Capella/Turner with what we can offer.
