2021 Free Agency

Sounds like there’s more smoke on a potential Paschall trade. Gives us a stretch 5 and Donovan would be doing back flips if we landed him. Seems to make all the sense in the world.
source? just meaning a recent one, not the one from earlier today

Net rating is offensive rating minus defensive rating. For his career his offensive rating is 105 and defensive rating is 107 for -2 net rating. In the playoffs it drops to 102 and 109.

I know he does some okay things. I just don't get why so many people here want him on our team. I see equal amounts of positives/flaws and he is a bad fit.
B-Ref & NBA.com calculate net rating differently. For NBA.com, If I recall correctly, net rating is basically a +/- rating, showing how the team did when you were on the vs. when you weren't. In order to see the a similar thing in B-ref, you need to look at the +/- per 100 data.

In B-ref, offensive rating and defensive rating are more tied in to box-score stats, and are not simply a measure of team success with you on the floor. So some people look better according to these measures. Thus, for example Tony Bradley looks mostly great by this metric, but quite a bit less good by the NBA.com metric. I tend not to give much weight to the B-ref. offense /defensive rating in combination.

Smart looks great by the NBA.com net-rating metric:

Well let’s cross our fingers on Gay. I think LAL might try to use their TPMLE on him and if that’s the case then the Jazz are probably gonna be sifting scraps for free agents.

Maybe not, but I subscribe to the notion that they’re not just gonna spend that money on anybody, and the list of worthy candidates is drying up fast.

Good on the Pacers for targeting Craig and doing what someone last off-season should’ve.

What’s the list of worthy candidates at this point? Millsap?

I don’t think there is anyone else available I’d use the full TPMLE on besides Gay.

All stats aren't accurate. He's comes off poorly in the stats I quoted regardless of the difference between the two. He doesn't come off great in the NBA net rating. Compare him to his teammates he is usually 7 or 8th in the regular season like I said before, but at least positive. In the playoffs he is terrible . This year he was -13.2.

But here is the stat I'm quoting from b-ref. He does poor in his off and defensive rating per 100. Which is a +/- per 100.

From the website

"ORtg -- Offensive Rating
An estimate of points produced (players) or scored (teams) per 100 possessions
DRtg -- Defensive Rating
An estimate of points allowed per 100 possessions"

Stats aside my point still stands. I don't see the reason why people want him so bad for the Jazz. Maybe if he was a min or cheap 3rd option I could see the value. But as a starter for the Jazz or 6/7th guy I don't see it.

It like like we are adding some min contracts later and that's it for FA. I guess we will see if a trade happens later. But I'm expecting us to run it back more or less.

Isn’t happening. Too many off season like this one where Rony Seikaley’s of the NBA refuse to play here. Even though doing so could get them a ring.
**** Rony Seikaly, too. He cost us a ring. He’s a DJ now. Not a radio DJ, like a record spinning DJ.

If we strike out, what are the odds we get Georges back?

I would love to add Paschall regardless.
Yeah. I think there could be something there besides just a friendship with Donovan. I know it’s been trending the wrong direction for him but his strength, athleticism, and how he flashed to begin his rookie year feels like there’s more there.

Like, if he can get his feet under him and especially if he continues to improve his long ball he could be a really useful piece as a compact big.

I am not going to let the fact that some always busted MLE scrub chose not to sign here overshadow the fact that we convinced an All-Star to sign another contract and stay in Utah.

Today was a good day.

I'm not going after your larger point.

I'm just saying you've been drawing the wrong lessons from the stats. Smart comes out well. If you remove the small-minute players (which I think you should, because the sample size is too small to be trustworthy), he's almost always among the top five of the Celtics, sometimes in the top three, despite being on very good teams with other high net-rating players (Horford, Irving, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, for example).
