Jazz Sign Rudy Gay

Ehh. Kinda? People saw Bey as someone that needed to change his game in some fundamental ways to work in the NBA. Butler looks like an NBA rotation player today. His handles, range, and vision are there. I honestly doubt the Jazz even keep the pick at all unless they were drafting someone they seriously believed could contribute in some way this year.
Hope you are right. Now matter how we slice it he fell into the 2nd round. We have had some great 2nd round picks in the past that could contribute year one but it doesn't happen very often.

Three years ago I would be very happy with this signing. Unfortunately, Gay doesn't seen to have much left at this point as he scored 11.4 points per game on 10 shots last season. Besides, he barely goes to the basket nowadays as only 12 percent of his attempts are from 3 feet in. and his FG% close to the basket was a very mundane .620 last season, second-worst mark of his career - per basketballreference.com . For comparison, Bogdanovic, who is not a very athletic player, goes inside in 18% of his FG attempts while shooting .635 on them. Thus, Gay is just a decent backup PF as a "stretch 4" at this point but was signed for a low price and is clearly an upgrade over the very very limited Niang. Besides, his signing means the Lakers don't get him, which put a smile on my face.

One of the reasons why I always thought it made sense to trade Bogey is because we're over allocated on scorers, especially when everyone is healthy. It made sense to me to trade one of the scorers for more of a utility player. I've said it before, but people stress way too much about the minor stuff. If you want significant change (and we definitely need that on defense), you're going to have to do so by moving a significant player.

If you think Bogey's individual scoring was too valuable or Niang is just that awful....ok agree to disagree but I can see your point. But with Gay on board, it only makes me feel more strongly that we should execute a Bogey/Clarkson trade for a strong utility player.

Gay isn't close to the shooter that Bogey is, but he's at least as good as Bogey as an individual scorer and also a much better defender and rebounder. I liked Niang as a cheaper alternative to Bogey, but Gay isn't bad and I can see situations where you want Gay closing games and didn't see as much potential there with Niang. So I can definitely see him as the better alternative.

But if we don't make that move, we have way too much invested in scoring and this Rudy Gay signing feels wasted.

How many times did we have a complete drought of scoring for a whole quarter during games?

Very rarely, actually. Our offense was insane all year including the playoffs. Our defense was miserable. Even if you think offense is the problem, whose shots is Gay taking? You don't completely disregard the defensive end because your scorers have a tough time in a quarter or two.

The third quarter sucked all year long, especially the playoffs

Third quarter offense was number 1 in the league during the regular season at 121.1 and 122.8 (4th of 16) in the playoffs.

What really sucked was conceding a 127 oRTG to the Clippers.

Gay a much better rebounder. That may not seem important for the amount of time he’s on the floor, but it will prove to be so.

Honestly think it's the best skill he brings, as anemic as rebounding was last year.
If a big reason for signing Gay is to have the option of playing 5-out on both sides sides of the ball, rebounding is a key in having it work.

I don’t think Quin is going to do this. But I’m currently aroused by using the Ed Davis TPE and two second rounders for Gasol.

Remember when Quin played Diaw as a 5 before that type of thing was common? What happened to that guy?
