I think he only did that because Rudy was hurt and he hated Jeff Withey.Remember when Quin played Diaw as a 5 before that type of thing was common? What happened to that guy?

Jesus… sorry we couldn’t get Kawhi Leonard for the taxpayer MLE.I mean...do we really want Rudy Gay shooting pull up mid range jump shots in the playoffs. Over everyone else on our team? Shot creation is the last thing this team needed, and that is Rudy's biggest strength. This isn't a Joe Johnson situation where the team desperately needed another scorer. We have multiple players who only score.
Offensively, the biggest thing we need from this position is someone to make wide open shots. While Gay just had a career shooting (hopefully he doesn't regress at 35), we just replaced a guy who shoots significantly better. Also, if we're going to take his 3 point shooting for last season was real, we ought to point out that his mid range was bad last year. That's why he was wayyyy below league average efficiency.
Defensively, he is an upgrade over Niang I'll give you that. As long as age doesn't catchup to him. The rebounding is a nice plus too. Gay only played about 100 minutes at C last year. He can always start playing C, but it's not really something he's done before. I'm not sure what having the small 5 does for us anyways. Does it space the floor? I suppose, but the rim running C has provided so much value in our offense which has not been a problem. Does it do anything for us defensively? Not really.
If it was a perfect fit, he would provide the things we need most. Perimeter defense, defensive rotations, defensive playmaking ect. Rudy Gay might still be a nice payer, but that is not his game. His game is providing shot creation and that is not a need at all.
Well they were dating the same chick at the time so….I think he only did that because Rudy was hurt and he hated Jeff Withey.
Elaborate.Well they were dating the same chick at the time so….
They weren’t but Jeff was dating that crazy playboy girl and if you know Quins history then it wouldn’t have been all that crazy to think maybe he had a couple dates with her.Elaborate.

Your assessment of Gays game needs some serious refreshing. He isn’t the midrange chucker he used to be. He brings a bunch of flexibility and modernized his game. Same thing JC did to make himself a winning player.
This deal is a home run… it’s as good as we possibly could have done.
His three point attempt rate will be over 50% as a Jazz man. He got to 44% this year which is double from his Sacramento days. While he’s slowing down athletically he has more athleticism as an old man than Niang ever had. He’s got length and I think he’s going to get some run as a small ball 5 and do quite well. Can he be an effective roll man? He might be great because he can actually handle the ball off the catch. He’s a piece that Quin should be able to use in a variety of ways.I do think we are fortunate to get Gay at the TPMLE. He is a good value. If you’re saying he’s the best we could have gotten with the exception, so wouldn’t necessarily disagree. I was speaking more from the perspective of his game not exactly being what we needed. We didn’t need a plus usage player, but we did need better defenders and he might be one of the top 3 defenders in our rotation next year.
BTW, there is a reason why he was significantly below league average efficiency last year. It’s because he still takes a lot of kid range shots and he barely gets to the rim and FT line these days. Makes sense, he’s about to 35 and has played a million minutes in this league.
I love this deal if it motivates us to move one of our scorers for a utility player. As it stands right now, we have too many guys that want shots/touches. The move on its own isn’t terrible if we don’t make the deal. You’re right, we probably couldn’t have gotten a better player here.
My dislike is generally directed at the over allocation of scorers on this team and that Gay is one more plus usage guy. But I think we’re talking about different things here. I think he potentially adds to a problem that already existed, but you’re saying we couldn’t have done better. I think both are true.

He also will help us play big. If a team goes small like the clips did and they commit lots of bodies to Gobert then there will be cracks for Gay to attack and he will do work there.
I just think we shouldn’t be doing “yeah-buts” here. There was a very real possibility of us missing out and signing someone like Solomon hill to a minimum. I’m glad he can use possessions. There are times we need that… like when Donovan is being trapped and kicks it over to the open guy.
Uhhhhhhhhh
This is... really bad...
It means they will only have matching rights to the MLE as they would only have Early Bird Rights. In other words; If he pops, someone will poach him really easily.
Should’ve just picked him at 30 if the seconds didn’t even get Favors off. Really, incredibly short-sighted for a dude they supposedly targeted to trade up for in the lottery.
Is that legal? We need these rights if Butler turns out to be half of what many think he will be. Send a 2nd.Wonder if the Jazz can work something out with SAS to make Gay a S&T into the TPE.
i think being over the apron does not allow them to get players via sign and tradesWonder if the Jazz can work something out with SAS to make Gay a S&T into the TPE.
Yeah, I thought we talked about this specific scenario not being allowed.i think being over the apron does not allow them to get players via sign and trades

To make Butler feel slighted out of the gate? He is, by the way. His introductory press conference featured him spilling a little salt about the draft.Yeah, I’ve thought this. Not having the first round contract stuff may bite us in the ***. And for what?

I’d like to see Butler play a few games before I anoint him anything. To make Butler feel slighted out of the gate? He is, by the way. His introductory press conference featured him spilling a little salt about the draft.
