Jazz Sign Rudy Gay

He doesn't solve the defense issues, but he is a solid player. Not a negative. Much wiser than the Favors deal last year.

I do think this opens the door for a cash cutting Bojan or Joe deal though. Unfortunately.

He shoots a lot of threes now, rebounds at a high level and can play four and five… and yes in the playoffs when things him up the midrange game might be useful… GTFOH with the nonsense… this is so much better than other teams did with their exceptions. Sorry NiNag is gone.

I mean...do we really want Rudy Gay shooting pull up mid range jump shots in the playoffs. Over everyone else on our team? Shot creation is the last thing this team needed, and that is Rudy's biggest strength. This isn't a Joe Johnson situation where the team desperately needed another scorer. We have multiple players who only score.

Offensively, the biggest thing we need from this position is someone to make wide open shots. While Gay just had a career shooting (hopefully he doesn't regress at 35), we just replaced a guy who shoots significantly better. Also, if we're going to take his 3 point shooting for last season was real, we ought to point out that his mid range was bad last year. That's why he was wayyyy below league average efficiency.

Defensively, he is an upgrade over Niang I'll give you that. As long as age doesn't catchup to him. The rebounding is a nice plus too. Gay only played about 100 minutes at C last year. He can always start playing C, but it's not really something he's done before. I'm not sure what having the small 5 does for us anyways. Does it space the floor? I suppose, but the rim running C has provided so much value in our offense which has not been a problem. Does it do anything for us defensively? Not really.

If it was a perfect fit, he would provide the things we need most. Perimeter defense, defensive rotations, defensive playmaking ect. Rudy Gay might still be a nice payer, but that is not his game. His game is providing shot creation and that is not a need at all.

Ya but it just feels right. Ya know?

Are you a Jazz exec on a burner account? To be fair we waived Jeff very young into the season. Sometimes these older guys need some time to get everything together and get a new system down. All the players loved Jeff, so I don't think it's anything to do with his attitude
What are you, his agent on a burner account?

So you're saying he was destined to be great but the short-sighted leaders of the team just couldn't see it so they bailed out way too early, but of course you saw it all along, right?

Sorry, he was cut for his performance. We needed him to perform and he didn't. You act like we played him 3 games then said "**** it, cut him" which is not the case. In fact when he did move he almost immediately made headlines with some great games. So much for needing a season or 2 to get going. We all here talked about his failure to do anything at all and many thought he was cut too late based on his performance.

So you can claim to know what was going on in his head, I'll stay in reality and base it on his behavior. Fact is he didn't do anything here, then he did when he moved.

Maybe it was Quin's famously nuclear-physicist level complicated schemes he struggled with. Maybe he just didn't like his role. Either way he was cut because he wasn't doing ****.

I wanted Gay last time he was available and was bummed he went to the Spurs. I was so jazzed last offseason with our FA pickups and thought that Jeff Green would be a perfect fit. I am actually more unsure about Gay than I felt about Jeff Green as a fit.

Having said this, I am super excited about Rudy Gay but a touch concerned about a repeat of Jeff Green.

Did you guys know that his last name is spelled and pronounced exactly like the term that is commonly used for when people of the same gender are attracted to one another?

When Rudy was drafted the Jazz picks that year were Ronnie Brewer, Dee Brown and Paul Millsap. Jeff Green got a nice deal from the Nuggs yesterday. I would really like to know the true story of what went down when the Jazz just booted him. KD and Steve Nash really said some nice things about him.

I like this deal a LOT more if we move Bogey...but with Bogey on the roster, I'm struggling to understand why we needed another scorer. We have soooo many guys on this roster whose main value is the creation of shots. I suppose Gay is the best defender of the bunch...but that's kind of the problem. If Rudy Gay is one of the better defenders in your rotation, you need to get better defenders.

6’8 who can defend and shot 38.1% from 3 on 4.4 attempts per game last year.

Literal best case scenario. This off-season has been absolutely perfect. Crazy ****.

We agree that if this makes any piece already on the roster more movable, it’s Bojan.

Yeah...Rudy Gay is an impressive get and I don't want to rain on anyone's parade there. If we had already traded Bogey for a Nance or Thad type, an actual utility player, I could definitely see the need to go after Gay. We have too much allocated to guys who score.
