Trade deadline discussion

No thanks to Oubre. I think I would get as frustrated watching him night in and night out as I do watching Clarkson.

I've wanted to get Watanabe for a long time. Biggest problem, though, I think is that Raps love him from everything I've seen coming out of there. I think it takes an overpay to get him out of there.

You all remember that Yuta was a high school teammate of Eric Paschall, yeah?

Jazz get my boy Watanabe. They get Ibaka too (salary matching reasons). He's probably washed, but maybe he could be effective in the playoffs. I would also include a top 20 protected pick from the Raptors that turns in a lottery protected pick the next year if it doesnt convey.

Raptors get Keon Johnson, the 21st overall pick from this year.

Clippers get Jordan Clarkson. They have one of the worst offenses among playoff teams in the NBA by offensive rating.

*And yes I included Banton, who they arent going to trade. It can be BOnga but ESPN wont let me include him yet*
I don't get it from Toronto's perspective. You say they could/want to be headed toward the playoffs, yet you have them trading someone I think they see as a solid role player for one of the least playable rookies in this draft class. Plus they give up a pick that may end up better better than the one Keon Johnson was picked with.

They'd have to really love Johnson's upside to be tempted by this (admittedly he fits their style pretty well, at least in theory) . I'm doubtful that Johnson's stock is that high.

Why does Toronto want to trade Watanabe?

I think Boston is the best trade partner. They need a guy like Clarkson off their bench. While they don't have great assets in return, we could make the most of a 1st or Langford or Grant Williams. That Hernangomez contract is great. $7+ this year and nonguaranteed next year. Find a 3rd team looking to shed luxury.

I think they want to make the playoffs to get their young core experience in the playoffs. I dont think they care all that much about going far in the playoffs, so keeping role players might not be a huge priority to them vs obtaining talent.

ANd IDK if Johnson is one of the least playable rookies. He's putting up solid stats in the G-League (15-6-5). He still can't shoot 3's, so I guess that's what you're referring to. He's getting nice assist numbers though, and I dont think that was a thing he was projected as in college. He's an extreme athlete, like you said, I think he fits the Raptors preferences as far as players go. If a team really liked Johnson pre-draft, I dont see any reason why their opinion should have changed between then and now. Siakim/OG/Johnson/Barnes are all very long/athletic/defensive types. I think Johnson is likely a better prospect than the 21st player in this upcoming draft (I said top 20 protected 1st year).

Because they get this guy....

Y'all being super weird for thinking the hang up on this would be from the Raptors. If anything it would be from the Clippers.

Covington coming off the bench now. Nance took his spot. People are very down on Roco, and for good reason, but I still think that’s a name to watch for us.

Pls suggest a salary-match that you’d support

JC is the obvious one. I don’t think POR should do that trade and it’s not the type of trade they’re probably looking for…but that’s the obvious outgoing salary.

JC for RoCo is interesting... Would need to be a third team involved. I think Covington is pretty over-rated and am not a big fan but I get it. I think his trade value is at an all time low so if you are going to buy then now is a solid time. I think I'm ready to get off the JC roller coaster at this point but I'm sure there is still some value to what he is doing out there. His +/- and on/off stuff has still been good.

Locke’s “points gained” analysis is super negative on Clarkson.

My eye's bleeding analysis has also been super negative. It just feels like he is capable of playing a little more reserved and now that we have him on the floor with better offensive players maybe he should slow down a bit on the LFF style of shot evaluation.

Routing a few possesions to Gay, Ingles, or Conley/DM when they are on the court with him seems to be a good idea.

Agreed, JC has been shooting horribly but I think there is a method to the madness. Taking on the large offensive burden does help the offense, even if he's inefficient and it's a tad too much.

I'm down on Roco too, but I've been watching the Warriors play a lot and he would be so damn valuable in that series. Curry is so good you have to trap and recover. Inevitably you're going to be in a lot of 4v3 situations with the ball in Draymond's hand. I still think very highly of Roco's ability to cover space, recover, zone up on the weakside ect.

I aware that Roco might becoming "the idea of Roco" at his age, however. In theory he's just the guy we need, but he's also just the guy POR needs and he's not been that guy.

The other thing I've been thinking on is if you replaced JC with a wing sized guy in most lineups I think it adds a ton of length and now you are oversized in some lineups rather than undersized. RoCo makes more sense if we did decide to try a non-center lineup or two... I think we do it in the playoffs but it will likely be reactionary and out of desperation... and eventually fail.

I think my only minor frustration with this year is that we don't really seem to be preparing for the playoffs in some ways.... resting Mike, playing small (we only did it when Hassan was hurt). I understand why we haven't gone small because Hassan has been so damn good.

My ideal scenario: Trade JC for a defensive wing, develop Butler and see if he can be an emergency ball handler/scorer com playoff time, if not sign Galloweay/Buyout guy who you'd feel comfortable giving 10 minutes if someone got injured in the playoffs.

If we have anyone available, we might just see JC's role decrease to 10 MPG anyways.
