Utes 2011 Football Discussion

I agree that Utah should be well prepared for the option. I am not too sure about Utah putting up 27 points though. I'm sure Georgia Tech will be well prepared for Utah's offense too (or lack thereof).

Who knows though? Maybe Chow will shock everyone by finally opening things up on offense.

I don't know why people are complaining about Chow and not opening up the offense. Chow did a fantastic job, considering his pieces. He has John White IV and that is it. Yet, with everyone knowing that all Utah can do is run, he still made White IV look very, very good.

Open up the offense? Are you serious? That would be stupid. Did you not watch the ASU game, where Utah had the lead late in the third quarter, Chow opened up the offense (ie, let Hays throw the ball) and Utah went on to have three turnovers in seven, yes SEVEN offensive plays? Hays is awful. Chow has made him look decent. It's a miracle the offense even scores with Hays on the field. He may be the worst backup QB in division I football.

The play calling in the Colorado game was pretty atrocious. I look for a better job going forward.

Hays sucks, I completely agree with that. But John White is absolutely not all the Utes have on offense.

The Utes have several NFL caliber receivers. They also have an offensive line that has 2 all Pac 12ers.

I see no reason at all why we didn't ever see any flea flickers, halfback passes, bootlegs, options, or any other trick plays. It was run up the middle every single play, and every once in a great while throw a pass to a receiver who ran straight down the field. We almost saw any screen passes or reverses either.

So I get it that Hays sucks. But that doesn't mean we can't try any Boise State type plays.

This. His offense was predictable and ineffective even before Wynn's injury. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the play calling and the game plan against Colorado was absolutely pathetic.

I am confused is too why signing Chow was a good idea. He is the worst OC we've had since Andy Ludwig. At least so far. Maybe next year he gets the team to play his system better. But I am losing faith in his ability to produce yards and points very quickly.

Salty, I agree that Utah's receivers are very good. I do think DeVonte has a shot at the NFL, I think Anderson will be there, and I am excited to see Scott and Gordon play. That being said, Hays is bad. Utah did try to run some trickery, reverses, flea flickers, reverse fakes with DeVonte looking to pass, etc. Nothing worked. I haven't watched the Colorado game again, but I remember wondering if the play calling was awful, or if Hays was holding the ball too long on the pass plays (I would lean on the Hays side of the fault line).

gregbonics - The Chow hiring was a great hiring because of this: Travis Wilson and Chase Hansen. Possibly Josh Gordon. All the 6 ft 5+ 300+ lb offensive linemen supposedly verball-ing to Utah. I can't wait to see this offense next year with a QB that can actually make a decision. There has to be someone who emerges from Wynn, Wilson, Hansen, and hopefully Crist (even though the Trib says Utah isn't interested, but in my mind Lya is an idiot).

Not relevant if the QBs are turnover machines and/or lob ducks.
You don't think the QB being a turnover machine has anything to do with the fact that only about 3 passing plays are ever used?

If the defense knows precisely what play you're running, they have a much better chance to stop the play from succeeding.

I agree that Hays sucks. That doesn't mean we should have games with less than 10 pass attempts, and only 5 or 6 different plays attempted during the entire course of the game.

In order to run more than three plays, you have to have a QB that can make more than one read....and throw it on time....

Hays is awful.

That doesn't explain why we never saw any halfback passes, options, bootlegs, and very few screen passes and reverses. Not to mention we only ran about 3 different running plays over and over again.

Hays sucks, I completely agree. But we still only ran about 5 or 6 different plays during the course of any given game. Our play calling was probably the worst in all of college football.

All I have to say is that Wynn better not be starting next year.

Wynn's a heck of a lot better than Hays. If he's starting next year it's a major upgrade.

I would rather have someone better than Wynn, but after watching Hays this season from Hays I'd even be happy with Wynn at this point, lol.

Wynn is garbage with a garbage arm. If he is starting, expect a similar season.

Anybody else hear the rumblings that Arizona State has Whit high on their list? Nice try douchebags, but it aint happening.

Inconsequential. Stupid, lame UteFans.net humor. Waste of time and proof that board's format sucks. You have to dig through ten pages of that crap. Ridiculous.

America's got G-Tech beating us..

Todd Mcshay has 10 confidence points on G-Tech as well citing QB issues with Utah.
Fair enough though I think Ute fans are hoping neither team will have to pass that much.
