Why are you talking parties when the issue is Trump's failed attempt at becoming a dictator and the people who aided him. They flied their stupid flags, put on cheerleading gear and dressed up like mercenaries and thought they could just take our country away from us and give it to him.
The “coup” would never have worked. As far to the Right as the SC may be at the moment, they would not stand for this. Trump would have failed to remain in power. But that doesn’t mean we therefore just say “bad boy!”, or “oh well, who took it seriously anyway?”. Of course it’s right and proper and necessary to hold Trump and his co-conspirators to account.
When was the last time a sitting president tried to prevent a peaceful transfer of power? When was the last time a president spent over one hour watching American citizens trashing the People’s House on live TV, and what, munched cheeseburgers and enjoyed himself?? I’ll check my American history texts.
I think Mongoose believes FBI infiltrated groups like the Proud Boys in order to “help them”, so they could be blamed. I don’t think they really needed any help. Trump had already told them “Stand back and stand by”. But I sure do understand not trusting the FBI. Those of us in the anti-war movement in the Vietnam War era understood that much. Such cynicism is understandable to a point.
There was a fairly involved effort on the part of Trump and his direct helpers to remain in power. The last hurrah for that effort was the march on Congress on Jan. 6th. I feel badly, to a point, for citizens who showed up in the sincere belief that the election had been stolen from the man they voted for, and for coming to Washington that day to “help”, to “save” their nation. But most all of us know by now that they were duped. Most just milled around outside the Capital and never entered. And some, duped or not, have been held accountable for specific actions that day. Misguided patriotism, or Proud Boy radicalism, people are responsible for their actions. If the Proud Boys are bearing the brunt of long sentences, it is not the FBI’s fault in this instance, IMHO.
Now we’re approaching the toughest period of all, trying to hold Trump and his helpers to account. History, while not yet written, not yet having issued judgement, nonetheless expects this of us. History will not be kind if we drop the ball in holding such an act of unconstitutional audacity, striking at the heart of our democracy, to account. That’s just my opinion, but this is something we are trying to do, without the help of one of our two major parties. Unfortunately.
Who was the individual who duped everyone of those January 6th protestors? We know who it was. And if the GOP was not so intent on ramming an alternate reality, based on Orwellian Big Lies, down our throats, people like me would not be so concerned that there was a fairly strong fascistic movement alive today in the US of A.
