What's new

Lauri Markkanen, no longer considered untouchable?

At any given point in time I'm like... why would you trade 6-8 years of Lauri for 3-4 great picks and to truly tank for a few years... then a few minutes later I'm like... yeah what are we even building here... how do we get a better player than Lauri to pair with Lauri while in his prime?

This **** is hard.
The thing is you trade Lauri and it's like what's next? When do we actually get that HOF potential player? Feels like it's easier to just trade for one and keep Lauri.

But then sometimes I watch Lauri and it's like yeah, he just a top 30 guy, not worth holding onto if the return is great and sets us up for these next few great classes

I'm not anti tank, but being the next Detroit Pistons does terrify me.

Agree... you could be awesome quickly like OKC and Memphis. You could also toil in mediocrity like Detroit or never be good like Charlotte.

I do think we'd be insulated in either route we take because of the bevy of future picks we have and we have had some good young players in the pipeline now with George, Walker, Hendricks. Detroit has made some understandable but bad picks, they have had some serious bad luck with Cade, and then made some dumbass moves like the hole Wiseman, Bagley stuff. I understand what they were trying for with Monty but that wasn't the right move either.

Like its dumb we are accidentally way better than Detroit. Like how have they not stumbled on something goodish.

I think Kessler MIGHT be the type of rim protector that keeps us from becoming a true bottom of the NBA team. George COULD become the kind of offensive hub that makes everyone better. IF those things happen then we're just looking for that top 5 player that is almost impossible to plan on how to obtain, you mostly have to be lucky.

I think I still prefer building a good team around Lauri, even if the upside on that type of rebuild might not be as high.

Would anyone do Jaquez, Robinson, and 27/29 unprotected from the Heat?

If they want to include different salary filler that isn't Robinson that's cool too

I just want Jaquez. I think he is him and potentially a great third option type

I'd do it if it was 2028 and 2030 and we got a swap in 27 or 29 or both. Jaquez may be off limits for the Heat right now. He also might be the rare guy on a rookie deal that helps you win a little more than you want. Its a weird balance if you go into the tank, but if there wasn't a huge dropoff I suppose you netted some picks and a player under team control longer.

They did draft Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton
Yeah but that was understandable because Hayes was highly thought of... 4 more teams or so passed on Tyrese after them so I have a hard time assigning a ton of blame. For the most part they made the right picks.

The other thing that really put them in a 10 year funk is trading for Blake... the pick they moved later was moved for SGA (only moved up one spot). They needed to be patient.

I just don't think Lauri can get you more than two premium picks unless it's one of these teams like OKC who has more picks than they know what to do with.

Two picks and a guaranteed future starter on his rookie year seems like a great haul.

Depends on what you mean by premium picks. I think Indiana should give like 3 picks plus Walker... They should be unprotected in that scenario... Indiana may be pretty good so even though they are unprotected it may not be "premium".

The good news is that OKC should be EXTREMELY interested... and yes they are the whale.

Cade was a terrible pick. I know they didn't really have a choice – for one reason or another he had become "the guy" in a really bad draft, and this is how it goes in the NBA... you take "the guy" or heads will roll somewhere. But taking someone at #1 means that the kid is instantly anointed franchise savior, and Cade never had that in him. It was all a pipe dream. Yet the Pistons immediately gave him the ball and the keys to the team, told him to go to work... and he's been ******** the bed ever since. But because he was the #1 pick, they can't do much about it yet. Too embarrassing.

Cade is such a losing player that he makes Zach LaVine look like Durant. IMO he's one of the worst busts of the last 15 years, considering where he was drafted. Not really his fault – in a good draft he wouldn't have gone in the Top 10.

100 games... He may be more of a #2 than a #1 but I don't think he's a bust. Many young players struggle to be winning players early. The players around him aren't bad but no one can shoot and they are mostly young guys. If they want to give up on him I'd gladly take him off their hands.

Which is what no one here wants to do
Not really true. I may have been the original blowout up and tank guy. I think with Lauri’s market we should see what’s out there but no need to force a deal for tanking purposes. This draft just isn’t great.

Just read this. Lauri quote from article:
“Yeah. And I’ve been traded, I guess, technically three times with draft night included,” Markkanen said. “Sometimes I knew about it. Sometimes I didn’t. So I kind of learned the business side of basketball. I’ve kind of learned to just go day by day and really put the work in and try to play to the best of my abilities and whatever happens happens, really.

“Like I said, I love being in Utah and it’s a compliment of what you’ve done in the past (that teams have interest). We’ll see. But yeah, I just want to emphasize that I really believe in what we’re building here with the Jazz. Go day by day. Do your best. That’s all you can do.”

Love it.
