What's new

Lauri Markkanen, no longer considered untouchable?

Here is how a GS trade might actually work and I might be on board. They are a team I could see falling off and we've already seen some serious regression, so I would value their draft fairly high.

They owe a pick top 4 protected this year. It will convey... especially if we send them Lauri. When you make trades like these the language just has to make sure the Stepien rule will be satisfied. So we get...

2025 pick swap with any of the picks we own (ours, cavs, Twolves)
2026 unprotected
2027 pick swap with any of the picks we own
2028 unprotected
2029 pick swap with any of the picks we own
2030 they owe a highly protected pick to Wiz so we get nothing here.

The swaps have HIGH value in this scenario and you can use that swap value in trades. I think you could comfortably say you will end up pickin 5-10 spots higher with the super swap value.

We also get Kuminga and Moody - though I may route one or both elsewhere. More likely to keep Moody as I'm just not a big believer in Kuminga. Though playing without the GS system may unlock some things.

I think I would do this trade as GS is already on borrowed time. Steph likely ages well but tends to miss chunks of seasons here or there. If you have control of 5 drafts there will be a lotto pick or two in there.

I think this package would be lower on my list than a couple of other teams.

I can understand that. OKC can roll out a package that trumps everything and still have change left to work in the future. That is the whale.

Indiana can put better prospects but the picks are more likely to be meh. Maybe not though… anything can happen.

One hidden sweetner in any Lauri deal... if we send him out we likely sentence ourselves to being bottom 10 the next two years and bottom 8 the year after that... so we would retain the Favs pick.

This would be the DL "we really traded him for 6 picks" spin.

Yes and no. Unlike an AB addition that comes year after year... we would actually get a lotto pick that we otherwise wouldn't. It wouldn't make the next 2.5 years much more fun though. It also might be something OKC understands and pushes the price they are willing to pay slightly higher. They'd get really screwed in the deal as we are sending Lauri to a competitor and they lose a 1st rounder.

I just think if you look at who's good that's gonna suck soon... GS would be a team at the top of the list.

OKC really should be looking to add to this group. SGA is soooooo ready. Legit two way stud who will be a nightmare to guard in a playoff series. Whether its Lauri or OG OKC should be really active.

they kind of suck already
they wouldn't suck as bad with Lauri doe.

Klay looks washed but they will pay him to stay around (maybe not Dray money but still)
Wiggins looks as checked out as he ever has. He's also locked up long term... those two are related.
Dray.... well yeah
Steph is 35. Even if he ages like a Ray Allen did there is some regression coming.
They are capped out.
SF is not the FA destination it was 5 years ago as the city is such a dumpster fire.
They wouldn't have control of their draft for 6 years.
They think their **** don't stink.

Its a recipe for a serious downfall.

I don’t HATE it!

But your basically saying Markkanen is more valuable than Mitchell?
No, but I don't think the difference is that big.

But if we see the value of Donovan in retrospect, it's not close, after all. If we did get, say, 4 picks for Lauri, that would mean Don really netted 7 picks, 2 swaps, Sexton and Ochai.

I don't see the Warriors doing this. They'll need their young players and picks to stay relevant, and I'm not so sure they think Lauri is enough to make them a contender this year.

I'm not sure I would do it either, though.

I've mentioned it before, but if I was Presti it would be really hard not to start buying. They have a really good team, but have the assets to be a great team. In order to contend they probably need a big body that can go up against Jokic and Embiid.

Presti might have to accept a bad return to get off Giddey. He might be too proud to do it.

Both sides being hesitant is kind of where the deal zone is imo. Are Kuminga/Moody going to carry them to more relevance in the future than teaming Lauri up with Steph?

Yeah it's hard to let go and it's hard to let Steph down, but they should be sellers, not buyers.
