Following Potential 2025 Draftees

Thinking about how the Jazz were planning to pick Edey last year if Cody Williams was taken by the Grizzlies. Edey was a 0 star recruit which is not Ainge's style at all, but Edey is an elite interviewer which is Ainge's style.

Really lean toward the Jazz having Ace 7th on their board. He's just so bad in interviews compared to the other guys in this range.

Going to put a guess on the Jazz's board as

1. Flagg
2. Harper
3. VJ
4/5. Kon/Fears
6. Tre
7. Ace

Numbers beginning vs end of the season surely matter.

Kas was injured the second half of the season. His numbers pre injury were really good.

Fears is really young... he was barely eligible for college. That extra 6 months definitely matters.

Showing up at the big dance shows your fight and competitiveness. Also matters a ton.

If you are a scout and you don't understand the situations... you arent scouting. You are an analyst.

Thiero, Powell, or Penda? Who do people prefer at #21 as a defensive wing?
Aren't the Jazz contractually obligated to have everyone born in Utah have a run with the team for at least a bit? :p

More seriously, it's kind of strange that all I can find about where Thiero was born is that he was born in Utah (no city listed). Anybody know more than that?

Last year's was a strange draft. There were very few solid prospects with high floors and several of the top-rated prospects had serious flaws. The goal might have been to look for players with upside.

Trying the read the tea leaves for this year, I think the Jazz probably have Tre and VJ as #3 and #4 in some order. I think this talk about Kon and Fears is either a smokescreen or a contingency in case Tre and VJ are both gone. The elephant in the living room may be what the Jazz think about Ace.

It depends on whether the Jazz think Thiero will become an adequate shooter. If they do, Theiro's athleticsm and motor sets him apart as a defensive playmaker, imo. Otherwise, Powell offers more positional value due to guarding 1 -3 and potentially becoming a stopper on the perimeter. Penda will primarily guard wings, but can switch.

I very highly doubt that is anywhere close to their board.

I have looked all over. His parents were playing college basketball i think.

Why are people so mad at the idea that the Jazz (who seem to value interviews a huge amount) might be low on Ace.
Because it’s a wrong idea. There’s been musings throughout the season and this whole process the Jazz have liked Ace.
In addition, Ainge has a proven track record of loving long, athletic, wings that can shoot and have all the physical tools.

I would bet my life there is 0 chance that if at #5 Ace Bailey & Kon Knueppel are both on the board, the Jazz take Kon over Ace.

I mean, the Jazz passed on Cam Whitmore twice and GG Jackson three times to draft guards with minimal physical tools in Keyonte and Brice.

To be clear, the Jazz don't ONLY care about interviews as they drafted Filipowski and Collier (who both are terrible interviews), but the through line of their love for Keyonte George and Cody Williams and how much they liked Zach Edey really points to them caring a lot about interviews. Maybe nearly as much as RSCI.

I haven't really heard anything about the Jazz and Ace. Tony Jones seems to think the Jazz would have him ranked over Kon or Fears but didn't seem to suggest this was from sources. Andy Larsen and Sarah Todd haven't heard much about the pick from sources, but both personally dislike Ace a lot as a prospect. Locke hasn't really talked about Ace at all.

I know for a fact they’re very high on Tre Johnson and you have Fears and Kon over him.

Yeah, Tre is hard to rank because he's a great fit with what the Jazz did the last two years... But the AA comment about "we need tough and team first players" has made me question Tre and Ace's ranking with the Jazz now. Ace is not team first and Tre is kind of soft so it may suggest AA is lower on them.

But "tough and team first" may just be something said to make fans happy.

You bring up some valid points, but there's just such an overall talent and ceiling discrepancy between Kon & Ace. There's just no way.

I can't pinpoint exactly where I've seen the Ace stuff, but I've seen comments made by media alluding to the fact that they do like him. Also, if Any & Sarah don't like Ace as a prospect, that makes me LOVE him.

I have questions about Theiro’s ability to score in the NBA. But I will say it sure would be a breath of fresh air to see a Jazz wing that actually has a motor. It seems like it’s been a long time since we’ve had a perimeter player who actually had passion and effort. It would be kinda cool to see someone other than Sexton give a damn.

Theiro right now would be more effective than Cody will ever be.

Hyper fixation on the weirdest things lol. Everybody passed on Cam and GG, you’re not exactly cracking the code by fixating on them.

Yes, but the Jazz absolutely loving two guys (more than basically any other team in the league) who have no real shared traits other than being killer interviews (Keyonte and Cody) does suggest a through line.

But it's hard to know if this continues after firing half their scouting staff and bringing in a new POBO.

The Jazz aren't a singular entity. There are likely members within the scouting and decision-making teams that like every prospect. If they do have consensus opinions on prospects already (I doubt it), those opinions would not be valid if they were formed pre Austin Ainge.

I don't really get the guessing, speculation, and especially the arguments over who a team likes and doesn't like.

You act as if they have no other traits besides interviews and that a FO can only like one thing. You can’t even know for sure how their interviews went (or how current prospect interviews will go) and by your own determination the Jazz drafted guys who were bad interviews.

If the FO is are single issue voters who can only see shapes and colors you might be onto something. Not everything is so black and white. Understand that nuance exists.
