I never said clergy catering to layfolk, that's hyperbole.
Well you introduced that hyperbole and I thought you were being serious. My bad.

So there is a limits to what people can receive revelation for?

This has been an interesting thread, to say the least. I just want to sum up how I feel, because my last post wasn't all that great. Shocker.

I'm not going to make my mind up about anything until it's something that I know for a fact. The instant that I think I KNOW something, it usually ends up blowing up in my face, and I'm quite alright with just hanging out. I have a feeling that Gordon is so beyond anything we can even comprehend that once we do find out, if ever, we will look back on this thread -- or any other meaningless fight over religion -- and laugh and/or cringe.

I don't need to know, I'm happy with just believing. In fact, I guess I'm glad I don't know, because then I'd really have to work. Yuck.

Only if people base their self worth on what other people think of them.
If they have a self worth that is inside of them, or tied to a relationship they have with God, it doesn't matter what other people say or think as long as they know and God knows who they are and base self worth on that.

So basically if they don't tie self worth to what other people think, but base it on what they think and on what God thinks... and they are doing their best in that regard they should be fine.

What people, and many LDS members forget often, is that this life is a life of imperfect people that all make plenty of mistakes. We are on a journey to get better. Nobody is perfect, and we should not expect the people around us to be perfect. The whole need no physician.

How can they know whether God is pleased with them or if His view of them is consistent with how they view themselves?

Personally, I believe some are chosen to lead because they have much to offer. Some because they have much to learn.

God could absolutely take control and call all the shots directly, but then what's the point? We don't really learn much in that environment.

Yeah because God would make an awful teacher, right? I kid ..

I never said God doesn't use Pastors to Pastor, teachers to teach, singers to sing, leaders to lead .. I simply said it's not a hardfast rule .. He'll use whomever He chooses, however He chooses, on an as needed basis.

To me, there's nothing more powerful than seeing an unqualified, uncivilized, and unworthy (in the world's eyes) being used mightily by God .. I believe He teaches us humility and reminds us Who is God.

I simply must agree with that. There really is no other reason on this planet that I keep getting the callings I'm getting. The fact of the matter is, I am learning quite a bit, and I'm enjoying it heartily.
