OK, we still do it with Hayward/George - i.e. rue over who we COULD have drafted instead of Gordon. For what it's worth, I'm still very ok with that pick. I look at it as winding up with the guy who has turned out to be 2nd best in a very weak field. We didn't get the superstar, but dodged a bullet by not picking the likes of Aldrich, Henry, Babbitt, etc.

So let's compare the performance of Burke throughout the season against the others we could have selected at #9: MCW, McCollum, Adams, Olynyk and Shabazz.

I say Day 1 goes to Olynyk. Impressive first game. MCW and Trey both struggled.

I kind of think Trey reminds me of Earl Watson. Not their shooting, but in the way they both run, and the amount of athleticsm they have.

I think the jazz did the right thing for this particular team in picking up the best "pure" point guard in the draft.... I liked McCollum better but burke is better for this team.
Also I still think this draft was pretty weak, so we did well with what was available, but Im not sold on burke being our point guard of the future.... meaning that I still hope for someone better. (that Harrison twin point guard dude would be pretty sweet from what I hear)

So count me as a slight skeptic currently (though pkm has said a lot to change my way of thinking on the subject)
I see burke as a decent point guard, but nothing special.... I hope that he will be as good as mike conley
 
I liked Burke better than anyone we could have grabbed and a silly summer league game certainly isn't going to change my mind.

Yea Olynyk was offensively impressive but he struggled defensively. Besides the Jazz would have had to move up to get both him and Adams. So I don't think the Jazz passed on them. They were not available if the Jazz remained at 14th. I will keep an eye on Bazz because he would have been available and CJ because I think the Jazz would have moved up to get him.

However, using SL performance as a gage to what they will do in the regular season isn't fair or reliable. Burke struggled shooting but he did other things well - rebounding, passing and running the offense. His defense was good. I just think he was pressing and he will play better as he adjust to the speed and talent in the SL, NBA.

This is how I feel.

Count me in as skeptical, but I won't be mad if it doesn't work out. It was worth a shot I guess. I just hope McCollum doesn't turn out to be great and make it look really bad.

I know its just one summer league game but his lack of athleticsm jumped off the screen. It was a lot less than I was hoping for, but I knew it was a red flag from the beginning.


I think Burke has a chance to be pretty good, but I don't see elite potential.

You don't generally get elite potential with the 9th pick.

Right. The premise is that the Jazz moved up to #9. And at that point, they could have taken either of those players over Burke.
 
If we drafted Olynyk at 9, Lindsey would've been murdered by JF.
Also I'm not worried about his defense, he sees the game very well. His positional defense will be great, but he may never have the athleticsm and hieght to be very effective

Regarding Burke- I didn't watch the game, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was thinking too much on court today. Pretty standard growing pains at the PG spot. Burks had them this year too when he ran PG
 
Burke is the best passer and floor leader of this draft class, and likely the last three drafts. I also like McCollum, and while I don't see a pure PG mentality with him, I would have been fine with that pick. I liked Olynyk as a third big, but I think he might struggle a bit at the defensive end. I'm not sure Olynyk would have been worth moving up for.

The only draft scenario that could make me regret taking Burke would be Giannis and Wolters, assuming both turn out well. One other scenario would have been taking Steven Adams and trading one our other bigs in the future.

The Jazz made a good pick, a safe pick and likely the right pick at number 9.

I could go through a list a players who were great that were picked 9th or greater. Trey is supposed to be the best at his position in this draft. You should be hoping for a pretty good player. Not to mention that we traded two picks for him.

It's no secret or mystery. If he had that third gear he would have gone top 3 though. As long as he can nail his jumpers and keep defenses honest, he'll be fine. Today, like the pure shooter Caldwell Pope, his jumper was off. Nerves probably got the best of him.
