FAVORS: I am ready to be the leader for this team

Hayward is not an alpha. Burke is.
Truth.

Which is why I honestly can't ever see Hayward becoming a superstar. All superstars in the league are alpha types, it's not something you learn or practice on becoming, either you have it or you don't.

Hayward is not an alpha. Burke is.

Your best post on the subject by far.

... and .. you ruined it.

This, for sure!

If its by committee it means there's no true leader.. don't like it.

The only way that is bad is if there is no leader. Not a couple leaders that are working together.

So how many wins does having a bossy alpha male bring in? Seriously, this hampers a team's ability to win, not having a guy with an overinflated ego acting like the world revolves around him?

I don't see it.

There is a world of difference between a bossy alpha male and a leader.

PKM may not like this but Cousins is my example. He is obviously a bossy, loud, alpha male but he is NOT a leader.

I hope all of our 5 guys have the RON ARTEST TYPE mentality.

I can see the publicity now! Cage match provided at the end of games! Free to box holders and tickets are $45 for non box holders!

Just saying Hayward is the leader till Burke earns it. Not a believer in just handing a leadership role to a player. A true leader earns that role in the eyes of his teamates. With that said someone needs to step up and earn that position this year. In my opinion it won't be Favors.

Agree completely.

I'm baffled by this question, honestly. A leader is usually an alpha male.. otherwise the rest of the pack ignores and gives him wet willies.
Just because someone is an alpha doesn't mean he's a douche. Sometimes it simply means he is willing to do more than anyone else to win.

A leader, to me, is a player that understands the importance of practicing hard, team chemistry, going hard every play, and having the pureness of heart to get his teammates to buy-in to a level near his own. A REAL leader leaves the locker room after the coach gives some stupid halftime speech that was just dumb and rallies the guys and convinces them the coach walks on water. I'm not talking about someone who just barks at guys.

That, in my mind, will be Trey Burke.

I don't mind that at all. Good example.
When Cousins, Wall, Bledsoe, Orton, etc joined UK (and junior Patrick Patterson) there were plenty of alpha males.. and everyone wanted to lead.

But, when Cousins got vocal in a practice, Wall completely tore him down.. and Cuz accepted it because no one was going harder, waking up earlier, and bringing it everyday than Wall. The team quickly became John Wall's because he took it by force and led by example.. even as a freshman.

Let's at least give them all a chance before we say so-and-so could NEVER be the leader. Isn't that largely what this season is about? Evaluation? Maybe Favors (or someone else) surprises us.

And I just want to throw Kanter's name out there as the potential leader of this team down the road.

.

Perfect. I was hoping you would give the reverse side of my example.

Cousins and Wall both alphas. One is a leader and one is not.

Good answer

Burke will take lead of this team very quickly. And I doubt he will be bringing anyone donuts or carrying a pink backpack.

Here is what worries me about Favors: When things don't go his way, he disappears. Now, there isn't a ton of on the court examples of this, but where the hell has he been the last couple of years? Why didn't he take over games the last couple years? Why didn't he go to Corbin and say, look, this, this and this sucks, and I can fix it. Let me fix it.

I worry that we will get destroyed by OKC and then go on the that road trip and hit the Boston game....and Favors has checked out because the Jazz haven't won yet.

Burke, on the other hand, I could see still getting in people's faces at that time. Getting them up vocally, and by example. Going out and trying harder when times get tough, not disappearing until you play at home again.

good posts.

I think the rookie hazing stuff is pretty dumb. I think the team should abandon that starting now with the beginning of the youth movement.
