Jazz rotations unfolding

So it appears Watson is at least our primary b/u PG, with Price as a combo-guard used against smaller backcourt opponents. We'll see if that continues.
Raja Bell started, but his minutes decreased vs OKC with CJ spending most of the game at SG and doing very well. Notably, until benches were emptied late, CJ was the SG of choice. This allowed the Jazz to keep Kirilenko and his defensive prowess at SF on the floor longer with CJ's hot shooting at SG. Hayward's minutes shrunk too. The OKC game was played at an almost frantic pace; tough for a rookie to contribute much. CJ's versatility is a huge asset; if his offense is on, his defensive liabilities at SG become a lesser issue.
Millsap, already well conditioned before this season, appears to be both stronger and quicker, and his basketball skills are noticeably improved. It's gonna be hard to move him to the bench when Okur returns to move Jefferson to PF. We may end up bringing Okur off the bench the whole season at C and keep Jefferson as our starting C. And Elson appears to be the primary b/u at PF, with Evans getting limited minutes there too. Elson seems to be sharing the b/u minutes at C with Fesenko. Fes appears a little more timid out there in the regular season, like he's not quite sure of what he's doing. He still seems to lose his focus when he knows his minutes will be limited.
C'mon, Fes, get your head in the game!

Fes, what minutes? Also helps not being timid when your team actually runs the plays they are supposed to. See Al Jefferson, Earl Watson and others who keep breaking plays.

To say that Fes' minutes have not been in line with his contributions (esp. re: Elson) is a vast understatement.

Are you giving a reacharound to Fes?

I assume that question is out of line, because of the party asking. Be sure to cite me.

hack. Did you answer the reach around question that was addressed to you? Malone the Sketchers? I thought it was a pretty good question. Vogue.

So far, both Elson and Fes have both gotten about the same burn as each other, each a paltry sub-10-MPG allocation that is not a huge improvement from last year. Jefferson scored only four points in the first half of both the first and third games; this is not production that KF and FE would hinder.

I'm hopeful, but not convinced, that Jefferson and Millsap can handle taller frontcourts, including the Lakers. Fes and probably Elson could've handled Lopez, and anybody could've done a better job slowing down Sheldon Williams in the first game. Against the Jazz, opposition has scored between 42 and 48 points in the paint (with the 42 being from Denver and a higher number than Utah's 36; the only NBA average I could come up with is just under 40.

Fes or maybe Elson could've helped with that.

Fortunately Millsap's 5 PFs against Phoenix didn't seem to affect his aggressiveness, but the backups can and should be used to keep the starters out of foul trouble (and to manage their minutes so that they don't wear down toward the end of the season, which is what appears to have happened to Millsap in his first 20-game stretch as a starter).

Maybe Okur will be a real producer as a backup big, but I'm not convinced that Slowkur is the answer. His outside shooting threat doesn't always (usually?) compensate for the Turkish Torero defense down low.

Don't read too much into the rotation just because of one game. Like previous seasons, Sloan is going to go with who is hot. CJ/AK were playing a lot better than Bell/Hayward, so they got the majority of the minutes. Its going to take Raja a few games to get into the groove again, he missed almost a year of basketball. His minutes will jump as the season goes on, especially when CJ has a bad game or three.
