2014 Draft Combine

I agree

I have a hard time believing this, most of the greatest drafts ever have still only had 6 or 7 big-time players. I hope to god you're right though.

I might have overstated how deep the draft is. I see Parker, Wiggins and Embiid making All Star games. Many All Star games. I could see Gordon, Smart, McDermott, Randle, and Exum making 1-3 (I'm going off what everyone is saying off Exum. I put him in the 1-3 because I've never seen him play). That's 8. So, maybe 10 was high, maybe it wasn't. It's a deep draft.

Seattle is spot on in regards to Smart.

Yup. Another reason why I don't think defense will be a problem with Smart is because he is so strong. Your big worry about a small player is him being abused in the post. No one will abuse Smart in the post. Heck, I bet he could force out most PF's.

Smart's only question marks are 1 - if you see him as a PG, can he run a team OR 2 - if you see him as a SG, can he shoot well enough?

Just because a player can bust his butt for a drill doesn't mean he'll make the same effort and be as fast in an actual game. Ask Derrick Williams.

of course. game tape matters too. but the workout numbers help. it confirms thing. we all knew gordon is an athlete. and he confirmed that he is indeed a great athlete. and we do not have enough game tapes on these players. many of these studs are young. so as an armchair scout, you gotta try to gather all the info and draw reasonably educated guess.

and no matter what anybody say, size does matter in nba. it's always good to have a guy with good size. we can't measure heart and desire, but we can measure size. i don't want 6ft 5 power forward. there is no such thing unless you are barkley or larry johnson. it matters. i want my jazz to have some length and athleticism. that's a reasonable wish list.

I would argue you can measure heart and desire and Randle to me has plenty of both.

The main complaint about Randle's athleticism has not been has lack of vert, it's how long it takes him to get off the ground. He has to really bend his knees and get down low, then jump off of two feet.

That's another thing that's so amazing about Wiggins' athletic ability. Not only does he have an unreal vertical, but he can fully utilize it in the blink of an eye. One second he's just standing there, and the next his elbows are above the rim.

The point is there is a lot more to someone's athleticism than just the numbers that are recorded at the combine. These numbers tell only a fraction of the story. You have to watch a player actually play the game to judge their athleticism.

This is simply not true.... his athletic testing at the Combine, he achieved the 35.5 inch max. vert. leap off of one leg. See DraftExpress' comment below:

-Julius Randle performed up to expectations in the athletic testing, posting a very solid 35.5 inch maximum vertical leap jumping off of on leg. While that isn't a truly outstanding mark when ranked among the rest of this year's field, it is among the best jumps recorded by a player weighing more than 250 pounds in our historical database. Randle's combination of strength and explosiveness is a big part of why he ranks among the top prospects in this class. Randle's others tests all ranked right around average, which is not surprising considering its always been his tremendous combination of strength, skill and scoring instincts that separate him as a basketball player, not his pure athleticism.

Why would not shooting the ball well have a big impact? That doesn't make sense to me.
I like him and would be satisfied with at #23.

I dont think its a big impact, but enough to raise an eyebrow at. especially since hes 23 and some consider shooting to be his biggest strength, he shot on par with Jerami Grant, and was equally poor in stationary and on the move drills.

i didnt think too much of it though tbh, wasnt gonna mention it until i i saw him drop to #33 in the DX mock.

I'd like to know the real reasons behind scouts not liking him. I agree age is a factor, but when you get to the bottom of the first and have good teams selecting there.. not sure it should really matter.

Also DX has continued to caution Aaron Gordon... despite strong showing at the Combine he's still #11 on DX's big board.

That surprises me too.

I think despite all of his physical gifts and attributes (of which there are many), as a basketball player he still has a long ways to go (starting with his FT shooting and overall FG%).

His position in the NBA is still unclear... it is most likely SF, but he hasn't spent a lot of time playing it so far.

There have been times when darftnet has had some ridiculous takes that, tbh, they were spot on. /blindsquirrel

Anyway, for the longest time they had Gordon at BOTTOM of 1st round.

some classic NBAdarft.com player comparisons

Jerome Moiso : Kevin Garnett
Kwame Brown : Kevin Garnett
Deshawn Stevenson : Michael Jordan
Demarr Johnson : Scottie Pippen
Alexey Shved : Penny Hardaway
Desangana Diop : Bob Lanier
Adam Morrison : Larry Bird
Marcus Fizer : Charles Barkley
Pau Gasol : Toni Kukoc
Dwight Howard : Kwame Brown
Maciej Lampe : Dirk Nowitzki

What does Gordon do that makes you dream of championships? His FT is poor, his on ball defense is average, his shooting is questionable, he doesn't have an offensive game, he doesn't shoot the ball lights out, too small for a PF, not a good enough shooter for a SF, etc, etc.

He is athleticism is amazing, but what does he actually do? His biggest asset is as a weak side defender. Is that something you risk your job for? I dunno.
