2023 NBA Draft Megathread

Cason Wallace who started the season with ridiculous shooting, has cooled off in major way.

MonthMPG (GP)PPGFG% (FGA)3P% (3PA)
October20.5 (4)8.385.7 (3.5)83.3 (1.5)
November22.4 (14)6.756.1 (4.7)51.9 (1.9)
December21.4 (13)6.344.6 (5.7)30.8 (3.0)
January20.0 (8)6.639.0 (5.9)32.1 (4.0)

So greatly increased shot totals but meanwhile his FG% and 3P% are travelling backwards fast. He still has pretty solid looking numbers for the season, but if this trend of increased shooting and decreased efficiency continues, he might end up finishing the season in ugly land, which is wild considering how hot he was to start the year.

His regression was predictable to a degree since he isn't a 40+% 3pt shooter right now, you knew he was going to have some bad games to bring his averages down. He's not a bad shooter though, so I'm guessing he ends up in the 35 to 38% range.

His problem is he doesn't have true NBA range yet. He can hit the corner 3, but is poor at above the break 3. Teams started to figure this out and so he is usually guarded pretty tight on the corners.

In the end his value has always been his defense. It doesn't make a huge difference if he is missing on average 2 or 3 shots per game.

It’s taken a while, but Gradey Dick highlight achieved!

I watched his 2nd half minutes. His struggles seem to be mostly due to nerves? Had back to back turnovers when I watched him.

He's got some terrible indicators early, but hopefully he can put it together in the 2nd half to the point where he's not embarrassingly bad.

Even this highlight is an example of that. Why does he go left to dribble directly into Herro instead of just continuing right and then dumping an easy pass off to the cutter? Game just way too fast for him right now.

Isn't that standard rookie stuff, though? If you give rookies, especially NCAA guys a lot of minutes they usually hit a wall.

All of his dribbles seem to end the same way with him in mid air smothered by the defense desperately looking for a teammate to dump it off to.

Anthony Black with less than a minute of garbage time last night.
Seems like they have gotten worse since reducing his role

They got worse when Franz and Banchero got hit with injuries.
So more than one thing happened. I see.
Weird that injuries would cause Black to get LESS minutes. Usually guys who don't play much get more minutes when injuries hit.

Good stuff.
I would like to see these stats for the whole league or jazz specific.

I can’t help but think about having Black in Dunn’s role right now. I thought he would be a great fit next to Sexton and understandably many said we shouldn’t be worried about fit next to him but now that he is balling I think more people would worry about it.

I like Black. It would have been good to have him or Wallace with Collin. I don't think we necessarily have to force a pg next to Collin but do want size next to him. I wonder if repurposing a SG into a game manager point guard that spreads the floor would work.

I think you plan on Sexton, Lauri, Kessler as the building blocks and fit around those guys. Would love to get passing, defense, shooting from the other two slots.

Wallace would have been great too. I agree with everything you said. I would just prioritize someone with size who can defend next to him.

I think Mark Daigneault has done a pretty good job with Cason Wallace giving him progressively more opportunities to handle the ball and take on more of an offensive load. Specifically he has used blow outs to give him more time at PG. This play right here is an example of something Cason hasn't been able to do very much of at the NBA level so far.
