Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 6 - Tony Jones From The Athletic

This new edition was again fun to listen to. I thought you guys might have Tony Jones coming in this time, and my guess turned out to be right. He was teasing us big time when he mentioned the Jazz tried to trade for a great player he wouldn’t reveal to us. I’m thinking maybe they did this (tried to improve the team) first, and then when nothing came out of it, they decided to do what they then did (go the other direction). My wild guess is that this mystery player was from the Pelicans.

Stay tuned for the next episode where we play guess who?

Yeah I think they will pick someone at 27/28 or whatever. I think they look to move 9 either in a win now deal or maybe to move up? Maybe it’s 9 plus Taylor in either scenario? Or 9 plus a future pick?

With the Wiz pick I think that one will be sold off for like 4 seconds… especially if we draft two in the first round. I think that pick will have a lot of value and they will have like 20 hours to market and sell it as the draft is split into two days. I think that one is very likely to move.
Having 2024 top 10 pick is a very good starting point to making a winning bid in a trade.

But I think TH has been bleeding value in the G League... so we may not want to give him up at this point. That is unless we are convinced that he is a bust. I dont think so, and I think we have to bet one offseason on the dude at least. Giving up on a top 10 guy and selling him with discount so early doesnt seem like a good plan.

There is a chance he shows improvement and high level flashes in the NBA in the remaining part of the season, which would go a long way in recovering his value. That is another very important reason why we needed to get him into the action. Flashes in G League arent really valuable, but bad production there is still detrimental. Flashes in NBA on the other hand can be very valuable, and production expectations are at least lower.

That Wiz pick to future seconds makes perfect sense to me, but it doesnt feel like a DA deal. But if we use our first pick instead of trading it, then I do think we must move 1 or 2 of the latter ones (pre or post draft) if we are serious about building with the current core. Cannot have too many long term projects if you are looking to make leaps.

I'm not much for listening to podcasts, so is there an option to get a transcript? I'd read the **** out of that ****.

Yeah I don't think his value is bad and obviously I'm not like excited to move him either way but just thought him getting run and showing some flashes is another way we might be better prepared to do a semi-meaningful deal at the draft.

That makes a lot of sense. I dont think his value is bad either, but its definitely lower than it should be right now and I think we need for him to recover it a bit if we were to trade him. Maybe he does it by the end of this season though.
