Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 7 - Who Is The Mystery Man?

A bit more on the Hayward thing... there was a question if Hayward would be considered a "buy" move with his age and being an expiring contract, in addition to the question of being better than a starter. Pretend we traded for Hayward and everyone on Twitter is melting down and everyone is tagging Tony about this move because 1. the drama but also 2. he's too old, expiring, not good anymore, etc. What does Tony say? When all of Jazz twitter is down on a Jazz player or acquisition, Tony is more dispassionate. Does Tony say that's a buyers move? Yes. Is it a buyers move? Yes. I mean, despite age, he's still only 33. Pretend it's not Hayward and you go out and grab someone putting up 14.5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and only 2 turnovers. If you get a solid all-around player that you can plug in to any lineup, that's a buying move, especially at the time if there was question of pushing for play-offs/play-in.
Agreed. And most of the age stuff put out on this board makes no sense. Simone and KO had plenty to offer in any reasonable timeline.

I still wonder about Brandon Ingram. He has been to only ONE All- Star Game so might not qualify as a "star" to Tony. He is still much better than the average NBA starter. I haven't heard any chatter on him coming to the Jazz. He's only 26 years old. He would be a very good fit with this team, fits Lauri's timeline, and is a 20+ per game scorer who's stats are honestly as good as Lauri.

I would think that's a star but its highly subjective. I would probably flip that card down because of that but I'd put the name aside to revisit if I got more evidence.

The Jazz management team already voted. If they were strongly Team Convey I think you definitely hold on to Simone. You aren't trying to force the young guys into the rotation. There is some value to them in retaining and kicking the can down the road. If they pick does convey I don't think they will cry but I think the preference is to have the pick.
Eh, I can see maneuvering into that 11-14 slot on the outside chance you hit the lottery. A 1-3 pick would be cool, even in this draft. If you think a 12 pick is worth something like an 18 pick next year, which is possible, I can see them wanting the pick to convey strongly should they not get lucky. Pick protections get messy when you are commodifying draft picks.

I just have a hard time thinking that if it were BI, that Tony would have described him like that. That would be the largest trade acquisition in Jazz history in terms of a single player’s value at the time of the trade.

I don’t think the pick protections here are messy or tricky though as we have a billion other picks to use in trades so don’t need our own. If we land 9/10 we have like a 15-20% shot at top 4.

Projecting out the quality of the middle of the draft is basically guesswork this far out. For 2025 and 2026 it’s a guess. The protections protect us against most of the catastrophic results. The 2026 pick swap is really the only really big issue… and there a greater than 50% chance it is worthless or the worth is negligible. Very small chance it’s SUPER valuable.

For @infection and anyone else who likes this ****. You have been warned @Saint Cy of JFC

Imagine you made a bad mistake and had to pay someone a maximum of $2,000 because of it. But this debt has some wonky rules where you can defer the debt or the amount will decrease or potentially go away based on how bad life is going for you. There is no penalty or interest for deferral. This debt also has a low chance... lets say 5% at costing you a chance at $10,000 in 2 years.

The debt collector comes to you and says you can pay it now at $2k or wait until you see how next year goes... are you paying the debt today or waiting? Why?

I needed something to do during a boring meeting at work and so I went to NBA.com and filtered all the players by those who have more than 30 games started this year. I then sorted by the top third in fantasy points per 100 possessions and then took out all of the all stars, those linked to us in trade rumors, those currently on the Jazz, and those who are on rookie contracts (because those players are not on the trade market). Here is the list:

That list is super big heavy, I'm guessing because of the fantasy points and rebounding. So here is a list of just the top non bigs.

I could see a totally left field move like Nurkic. Something that makes absolutely no sense but then we squint real hard and give reasons why it makes sense.

I'm still squinting at the John Collins acquisition... I'm getting nothing though.

It would definitely be a repeat ctrl + v with the previous crtl + c in the chamber. I’d feel the same. Or worse for repeating.

I think I’ve muted enough people to get Jazz twitter (the worst area on the internet tied with SLC Dunk) off of my twitter timeline….but was “team convey” actually a thing?

I mean, I understand team “keep the pick”, but “team convey” is just wanting to make the playoffs right?

It just so happens that the Jazz are in prime position to miss the playoffs and lose the pick.

Yes... James is the leader of Team Convey and he has infected others. It was a discussion yesterday with Tony and Andy as well and we are definitely out of the playoff hunt right now.

Folks are so convinced they can determine that the end of this lotto is trash compared to the next 2 drafts that are 15 deep with all stars I guess? Convinced Minny and Cleveland will be the two worst teams in the league in 2026 so we will miss out on the pick swap?

At any time, the Jazz can call OKC and offer another deal to change the protections on the outstanding pick that's owed so that it conveys earlier or later. However, right now the Jazz don't have enough information to make that decision. The Jazz don't have a clear timeline and don't have a clear #1 option-type player to build around. They don't know how the Cavs' and Twolves' situations are going to play out. So for now, the default should be to keep the pick.

If the Jazz really stumble into a situation where they've just got to convey the OKC pick or resolve it some other way, they can probably justify overpaying to do it at that point. For example, the Jazz can keep the #9 pick in this draft then turn around and offer it to OKC for some future protected pick if they there's a big deal on the table.

Don’t get me started on SLC Dunk lol.

Unfortunately it is a thing. Andy did a poll yesterday and 56% said convey and 44% said keep the pick.

Or the year is 2026. We have not conveyed the pick yet. Minnesota sucks *** and looks like a bottom 4 team. Meanwhile we are dominating the league and would be sending OKC the 30th pick cuz we are so effing awesome... would OKC be so kind as to give us our pick back if we give them the lakers pick in 2027. Remember they would get the 30th pick... cuz we will be so awesome. What else would they require to help us avert disaster?

There are other ways to resolve this without paying the piper this year.

I understand if team convey=team make playoffs….and I’m sure that’s what most people think. But I think it’s strange that some seem to believe we built this team with the priority of conveying the pick regardless of the playoffs. Seems like copium to me lol.

Its not copium... is dumbassium.

Also, something I haven't seen discussed....

What would make the player not mentionable? It could be the player in question was a center, therefore if the rumor got out, it could negatively impact Kessler.

I really didn't take it like that, but maybe missed something. I took it as, "I can't say the name because I would betray my source." not, "I can't say the name because it would be controversial."
