Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 8 - To Convey Or Not To Convey and Let’s Start A Discussion About Collin Sexton

And that is part of the reason I was looking for a champion is because I am not good at that yet... or with things I feel strongly about.

Wait until I have to fight @Elizah Huge and @Saint Cy of JFC on Flip. It will be all the confrontation you need.

To give you guys credit, I am off of Jazz twitter completely so it was interesting to hear what kinds of thoughts other people have. You didn't totally leave out the opposing view. Tbh, I didn't even know this was such a big thing.

I think all the points made about Sexton were fine, but just a little bit of devil's advocacy would have gone a long way. I don't know much about this team convey stuff....but I know for sure there are some opposing points about Sexton that would have made that a better discussion. The absence of any pushback made it feel like a homer love fest. It's counterintuitive, but articulating the opposing view will enhance your credibility and demonstrate a stronger understanding. But I get it....I throw all that out the window when it comes to basketball debates lol. Not an easy thing to do.

It’s probably hard for you to hear… but you probably need to hear it.
No talk about his next contract. No talk about how he fits long term next to Keyonte. For how much y'all (rightfully) raved about his play this year, there was no talk about if he should be prioritized as PG over Keyonte. Or maybe finding a PG that is bigger to better fit next to Sexton. No talk about trade value.

Why aren't people excited about Sexton while he is having a truly incredible offensive season? Because the FO/Hardy have clearly signaled Keyonte is the PGOTF and it's just tough to have Sexton as a starting 2 guard. He's also far too good to sign a contract to be a 6th man.

The "definitive" Sexton talk was just y'all reacting to advanced stats you don't have access to that you saw in Twitter...

Eh.. I pulled half my stuff from Basketball ref and nba.com. We are making the case that they guy should not be slept on and is giving us every reason to believe in him and yet... still considered a 6th man or not a future building block when he should be at this point. Not gonna get into contract talk as what are we trading him for right now? More picks? We need more good players and we don't think people truly understand how great he has been.

Not gonna worry about his contract until its time to do so... not gonna worry about if he is a starter on a championship team until we are several steps further in the process. We are simply making the case that he is way better (or has played way better) than he has been sold and we should lean away from pigeon holing him as a 6th man etc.

God the Sexton talk was truly insufferable.
I wouldn’t expect you to like it. It was a love fest because the guy doesn’t get enough for what he does. The episode would have been pushing 2 hours if we talked about some other stuff.

And by all means look for a Sexton upgrade, but the bar will have to be really high. I also think you can plan to build around both him and Keyonte. Players that would fit one player would fit the other. Its just weird to crown one guy and discount what the other is doing

I mentioned this when Tony came on the podcast… upgrading Sexton will be hard because that type of player had to be really good.

FWIW I enjoyed the Collin Sexton stuff. I don’t think every conversation about players needs to be had through the lens of team building/ front office decision making (especially in a podcast hosted by fans). He hasn’t really received the recognition commensurate with his level of play this year, so it was nice to hear.

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

That's what its really about. Production, attitude, and just straight entertainment value... Sexton deserves more love than he gets.

He has two years left on his contract after this year season concludes.

If you want to capitalize on his play, this off-season is the time to trade him. That's an interesting Sexton discussion to be had.

I'm not going to soil our Sexton appreciation pod by talking about his trade value and getting something for him. I don't think you heard the message we tried to convey. We should embrace his play and capitalize by playing him more.

And no, you can't build around Sexton and Keyonte if you want championship aspirations.
You can. You acquire guys that would fit with either... at some point maybe you pivot but at that point you should know the guy that you should pick. What player that we would acquire fits with Collin but not with Key?

If you would have prefaced the segment with that, I would have been far less disappointed. Instead I got "Definitive Discussion" thrown at me and I thought I was in for a discussion that talked about good Sexton was, then actually confronted itself with tough questions, but I didnt. I got an appreciation talk and "How isnt everyone super excited?" when the reason why people arent excited because the modus operandi of the Jazz informs us he is likely to get dealt at some point.

Definitive discussion is sarcasm my friend. If something on the pod feels like serious talk... its likely tongue in cheek. We are also trying to challenge some of the assumed messaging that comes out. Some of that stuff is just weird... sorry. Like the whole "Ochai needs to start next year" last season and summer.

Look next pod we will do the "THT deserves more love" pod... if you have 45 seconds give it a listen.

You’ve been telling me he was as good as gone the last two seasons and yet he’s still here.

I think I enjoy the conversation on here after the Pod as much as I enjoy listening. So thanks for posting on here and being willing to discuss.

I think the scenario where we don't have a 2026 pick, but wish we did for a swap is much higher than Elizah seems to think, but still think it's best to get a top 10 pick this year. At this point we have a good idea on who will be available in the 8-10 range and I personally like a lot of those guys. I think it's possible the FO has more information including next year's class and might disagrees though.

I think the chance we wish we had a pick in 2026 to swap is slim to none vs getting a top-10 pick this year. How good of a pick swap would it have to be to be worth giving up a top-10 pick and what are the odds of that happening as well? Very low.
