Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 8 - To Convey Or Not To Convey and Let’s Start A Discussion About Collin Sexton

Look I am not saying JZ listens... but I just listened to this interview. JZ talks about the last bad draft being 2013 and then lists off the guys taken after #10. Some say this type of thing is reductive.

JZ also declares Collin Sexton a top 50 player. Shrug.

Go ahead and add this to the fact he literally said early 2nds are the new firsts after the trade deadline.

Can you please put out a pod about how Jazz fans in Indiana should get free merch? TIA

I just don’t see the point in trading Sexton for non-win now players or pieces.

Then you look at what type of deal that would be and it just makes more sense to keep him.
The question is can he coexist with Key? I don’t think you can just make the easy fix and put him as a 6th man. A. His performance this and last year weren’t good. Second a lineup with Key and Sexton is going to struggle mightily and that is a bad situation for playoff ball. Look no further than DM and Conley playing together with the best defensive anchor in the game, great in the regular season bad in the playoffs.

Look, I love Sexton as much as anyone here. He competes as hard as anyone in the league he’s as efficient as anyone in the league, and he does try hard on defense, but his height limitations cause that area of his game suffer. I’ve been debating this problem with myself for over a month because I love him. He’s my current favorite jazz player but I’m not so sure we can win with him and Key together and the Jazz obviously aren’t moving on from Key anytime this or next year.

I think an alternating pick re-draft is actually an awesome idea.
I'm actually working on a redraft right now. I'll probably wait until the end of the season to post it though. There are some guys who are just barely starting to get rotation minutes and others I have rated very closely so the remaining games could sway which way I go.

Obviously a topic I would be interested in listening to though.

I listened to it. For the first part I enjoyed the layout of discussing the arguments against your stance. Although you left out the biggest reason for team convey. That is if we convey the pick that means our team plays very well and wins a lot of games against a very hard schedule. I don't see it happening but if it does that's better than the pick. Either way it's good for us.

For the second part it was a slobber fest for Sexton, but it was expected from two guys that like him a lot. But it's a sports podcast so I'm cool with y'all being a homer for a player on our team.

As far as Sexton goes I don't think he has much trade value and so I don't see him being traded unless he is part of a bigger trade. Maybe the team will really try to hype him up the rest of the season though.

Sexton last night: 24 points on 17 shots (wasn't his hyper efficient self like normal), 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers, team high +4.
Tied his career for 3 point attempts (5-11 from three).
Played 35 minutes. Saved the tank in the process.

Funny thing is that I kind of thought he had a bad game last night.

I figure if you play him 35 minutes a night then he would average right about 25 points (on amazing efficiency), 7 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 turnovers. And that is what I believe he would average right now. I think he is still improving and know he is always working hard and listening to and coaching he is getting. Those numbers could just be the tip of the iceberg.

That's a pretty awesome player who also happens to be very entertaining to watch.

Sexton is very very consistent.

His per 36 numbers: 18 shots per game resulting in 26 points.
6.7 assists.
3.6 rebounds
2.8 turnovers

Last night he played 35 minutes: 17 shots resulting in 24 points.
7 assists
4 rebounds
2 turnovers.

Against Washington he played 34 minutes: 19 shots resulting in 29 points.
7 assists
3 rebounds
1 turnover

Against the warriors he played 34 minutes: 18 shots resulting in 35 points.
9 assists
3 rebounds
3 turnovers

Against Charlotte he played 35 minutes: 19 shots resulting in 24 points.
13 assists
4 rebounds
3 turnovers

Against OKC he played 34 minutes: 19 shots resulting in 31 points
7 assists
1 rebound
2 turnovers

Against Houston he played 40 minutes: 27 shots resulting in 28 points.
5 assists
3 rebounds
2 turnovers

I didn't do any cherry picking. Those are the only 6 games he played at least 34 minutes in so far this entire year. Out of 30 games he only played 34 minutes or more in 6 of them this year. 5 out of those 6 games were amazing performances and the one outlier game (Houston) he was a +12 for the jazz.

Give him the minutes and those are the games you are gonna get. Pretty much every night.

So far in 2024 when sexton gets at least 34 minutes these are his averages:
35.3 minutes
19.8 shots
28.5 points
8 assists
3 rebounds
2.1 turnovers.

Are those all star numbers? How do they compare to guys like haliburton and fox and Lillard etc?

Thanks for the listen and the feedback. Only thing I really disagree with is I think Sexton has good trade value and if he doesn’t we better keep him anyways because he’s worth a lot more to us than giving him away for peanuts.

As far as his size, sexton is listed as taller than Lillard and the same height as Fox. Taller than Kyrie. Taller than Jalen brunson. Taller than ja morant. Taller than Darius Garland. Taller than Chris Paul. Taller than Fred van fleet.
1 inch shorter than Jamaal Murray and jrue holiday and keyonte george.

Now I tend to think sexton is shorter than his 6 foot 3 listing but he also plays bigger than he is. He is physical and strong. He has the Young Bull moniker for a reason.

8 assists to 2 turnovers per game? 28.5 points per game? Maybe sexton should be thought of as the point guard of the future more than he is. At least the point guard of the present ffs.

I can't remember the last time I did a complete 180 on a player like I have with Sexton this season. This stretch of great play is now going on 4 months. Good for him. So many guys deal with injuries early on and then can't get off the schneid. The Mitchell trade continues to look better and better.

Also, Sensabaugh getting 30 minutes in a stretch run game was not on my bingo card.

I think that is the wrong question.

I don't think he's close to 6'3". Taller than Brunson, FVV, CP3, possibly, but I'd put him at 6'0", _maybe_ 6'1". Interestingly, when I duckduckgo him, the blurbs on the first 8 hits range from 6'1" to 6'3".

Definitely physical and strong and plays bigger, but his height also definitely limits him defensively.

Ya I think he is 6 foot 1. They list him at 6 foot 3 on basketball reference though (the site I use most).
He looks about the same tall as Damian Lillard to me. Taller than cp3 and obviously taller than fvv.

I guess the main point here is that there are some really really good all star dudes around his same height.
