This is my favorite time when teams overrate players based on track and field events. Unfortunately some guys will just get measured and not tested.

Guys that might fall based on this testing... Frank the Tank, Russell, Stanley Johnson (not a leaper)... Guys that will rise Winslow, Mudiay, WCS...

I don't know if Porzingis will be a the combine because of his ongoing season in Spain, but he's another candidate for a rise. I fully expect players like Mudiay and Porzingis to absolutely kill the drills and the cones in individual workouts for the teams.

Porzingas reminds me of Lurch.

Porzingis in workouts will probably kill it... doubt he works out against anyone. I could see him shooting and dunking in an open gym with scouts salivating. Good call.

This year should be cool because there will be 5 on 5.

Can't for NBATV to be focused in on Chad Ford's balding head while the action goes on though.

Who knows. He would be on the fringe area of guys who workout. Usually the consensus top 5 sit out, then some dudes who agents want to act like their player should be top 5 also sit out. Porz could be part of the latter group or his agent may want him to show what he can do.

I love the measurement part of the pre-draft. Some dude who says he's 7' really measures out at 6'9". There is always some guy who is way shorter than he is listed and his stock drops like a rock. I also love the w/out shoes and w/shoes measurements. Some guys are 4" bigger with their shoes on. If I was in the draft, I'd get some six inch heels. Me thinks Frank The Tank is going to get killed in workouts.

Stoked has a newborn and probably is busy right now, so any of you fine moderators, shouldn't this be stickied?

Russell probably won't test, he is a lock.

This from Givoney over at draft express:

Hearing NBA Combine will be VERY different this year. NBA will earmark 15-20 top guys as "medical/interview only". Rest HAVE to play 5 on 5
====================

The five on five was a good idea, and I figured that the top guys would stay out of it, but as many as 20 players kept out of drills is crazy. But apparently it is not just drills and playing the top 20 will be skipping. More from Givoney:
=====================

Similar strategy to what we saw 5-6 years ago back in the "pre-draft/Moody Bible" days. Means no physicals/measurements for MANY draftees.

=====================

Glad Dennis revamped and fortified the Jazz's scouting program.

You must be one that thinks leaping means athetic abilty. Stanley Johnson is athletic . Don't let his grown man game fool you

Why would Frank get killed in workouts? This guy is a fluid Athlete. Sure he doesn't bounce off a trampoline but he is fluid

I meant in individual workouts with teams. None of the top 8-9 guys will play 5 on 5.

I didn't say it was right or wrong, but the knock on Stanley is he's not an explosive athlete... translation - some guys don't think he lightening quick or has a good vertical. I never said he was unathletic... I was actually mocking the process.

Strength is a part of athleticism... I don't think track and field events display basketball athleticism properly. Athletic testing is next to worthless in my opinion.

Isn't the NBA Combine mostly a publicity stunt which is trying to generate revenues similar to the way the NFL has with its own combine?

It's an offseason business plan... not a window into the soul of the game.

Not sure it generates much in the way of revenue or interest, but it does keep some NBA news flowing during a slow season. I think the interviews and such take place around the same time so there is some value there, but inevitably it seems as though someone rises based on testing well or someone falls because they didn't do so well. Or like on, Trey Burke or Nik Stauskas, guys will feel a little better about lack of athleticism because they test better than expected.

I don't think it gets near the pub that the NFL combine gets though.
