What's new

2018-2019 NFL Season

What if in the Olympics in the 100 meter race they flipped a coin and who ever won the coin toss got a 1 second head start? When that person won the race would we just be like "well the other guys should have just ran faster than normal and won the race anyway"?

Btw I'm not a patriots hater or a chiefs fan. Im actually happy that the Patriots won.

Just think that coin should have zero effect on the outcome of a football game. Also I don't think the coin has a big effect on the outcome. I think the effect the coin has is quite small actually. I remember seeing the stats for how often the coin toss winner wins the game and its not a ton more often than the coin toss loser. But the coin toss winner does in fact win more games than they lose.

So maybe the coin has only a 5 percent effect on the outcome. Maybe only 1 percent. I think it should have zero effect.

There's just not a realistic alternative imo. Unless you think they just just keep playing normal quarters until someone ends the game with the lead, which is unworkable for a variety of reasons.

A team gets a slight edge by winning a coin toss, but there are plenty of other 'random' factors that contribute to deciding a football game, like wind speed and direction, injuries, missed calls, etc.

If your defense can't stop the other team from scoring what they know will be a game winning TD, you don't deserve a spot in the Super Bowl, it's that simple. There's a reason they say defense wins championships...

No realistic alternative lol. Have you ever seen a college football game play overtime. It's way more fun imo.

There are many other things they could do to decide who gets the ball first as well. That could actually be quite fun to watch.

Some ways that I personally would enjoy watching.
1. Have each team pick their fastest player and have them race. Winner gets the ball first.
2. Each team picks their strongest player and those guys arm wrestle. Winner gets the ball first.
3. Each field goal kicker has a field goal competition. Start at the 50 and move the ball a few yards farther away each time until only one makes it.
4. Trivia competition between the head coaches.

Or just do what college football does. It works great.

Or any number of other things that aren't pure luck/chance

NFL needs to consider replays for penalties
Both championship games had major bad calls
Have a booth official review all called penalties and maybe ones that were not called like the horrible non call against the Saints

The defense has ample opportunity to respond and didn’t. LA’s defense did though when they picked off Brees.

Lol. The one time they did touch him it cost them 15 yards and possibly the game and chance to play in the Super Bowl.

But they only have themselves to blame. Just heard on ESPN that the only negative gain the pats. had on offense was their end of game kneel down. That’s just how soft KC’s defense won. They deserved to lose.

Defense is part of the game. LA did it’s job, they are in the Super Bowl, KC didn’t, they’ll be watching the Super Bowl with the rest of the world.

No, idiot!! It’s like me throwing the first punch and you are out like a light and laying on your ***, you could’ve dodged or blocked but didn’t. That’s what happened in OT

That’s one magic coin. Lol

As a 49er fan I haven’t been willing to admit it, but after last night, I can’t deny he’s the best QB of all time, but not best players that still belongs to the goat, Jerry Rice. Haha.
If a coin toss doesn't matter why are teams happy when they win the toss? It shouldn't matter right?

It gives the attacking team the advantage of being able to attack straight away WITHOUT having to defend, THEN attack.

That's the difference, and that's why every team would rather win the toss than lose it.

The NO call sucked, but they still had their chances to win and didn't. Refs make mistakes, you can't leave the game up to them.

The coin toss sucks. It's dumb that it gives a huge advantage to one team. Especially when it's a shoot out type of game. They set the record for most points in an AFC championship 4th quarter. Neither team could be stopped, the defenses were worn out. But Brady and the Pats were clutch on those 3rd and longs.

There’s some dudes in this thread with either (a) some seriously dumb takes, or (b) some serious butthurt.

Let me ask you this. Does the team that wins the toss ever choose to go on defense first?

No, that would be silly.

I think we so know that the answer is no. So if every team chooses to get the ball every time then there must be some kind of advantage to getting the ball first. Why should one team start with an advantage over the other team in overtime based off a coin?

Football is tha ultimate team game. If the offense is great but defense is much worse than your opponent, there’s a good chance you lose. If both offense and defense is on point you most likely win. KC put NE in three 3rd and long situations in overtime, in all three occasions pats made a play and the defense didn’t. That’s the ballgame. Had the defense (one of three phases of the game) made a play Maholmes gets on the field. The offense made plays and kept Maholmes off the field. They made the plays necessary to win the game.
Good point about the Rams picking off Brees.
I think an even better strategy would be for the defense to just get an interception every time the offense has the ball throughout the whole game. They should just do that in every game and then they would probably win the Superbowl every year

Actually every team should just get an interception on every possession in every game. Of course that would make for a lot of 0-0 games and would be kinda boring.

The cold hard fact is NE made more plays then KC.

They have absolutely the worst overtime period in sports. It’s ridiculous!! And the team that wins the coin toss in that still has the advantage as well.

Not just hell no but **** no!! I’m not stopping a game everytime a flag is thrown. NFL would become unwatchable

Coin toss does matter and gives one team an advantage, so what!!? Both teams have a 50/50 chance to win it. If you lose the toss, so what. Go play football make a ****ing play.

The saints are the biggest little whiny bitches I’ve ever seen!! They actually want Roger Goodelle to actually reverse the outcome of the game. What a ****ing joke.

If one team gets an advantage from the coin toss it's no longer a 50/50 chance (all else being equal).

Are you against another way besides a coin toss to determine who gets the ball first?
