What's new

2018-2019 NFL Season

If it were up to me, I would modify the college OT. Home team gets to choose offense or defense, visitors pick direction. Start at you own 30 (70 yards to a TD). Mandatory 2 point conversion.

You, sir, are an idiot.
Yes... yes I am.
So you think paper rock scissors would take too long and cause injury? Interesting.

Do you know how many seconds it takes to run 100 meters for these guys? About 10. The coin toss takes longer than that.

How long does it take a QB to throw a football? 2 seconds? Is that too long?

How about throwing darts? How long does that take? 5 seconds.

I don't see injuries happening in any of those circumstances.

Or how about giving the home team the ball first in OT? They were the better team in the regular season.

Funny thing is that if overtime possession was determined by a race or something right now and always had been and then I suggested that they do a coin toss instead you would think that is idiotic. Coin tossing has nothing to do with football, is not entertaining, and isn't competitive. No one would think it was a good idea if it weren't already being done.

Imagine pitching the coin toss idea. Dude it will be so awesome. A ref will flip a coin, players will stand around in a circle, and then the winner of the lucky coin toss will get an unearned advantage over their opponent! The fans will go wild for it. It will be so much fun

Wait... I thought we were talking about overtime? I don’t care how you decide who gets the ball first. Lmao

This whole discussion has been about the coin toss deciding who gets the ball first in overtime lol.

I thought the discussion was about the fact that Maholmes didn’t get a chance, and being unfair that the chiefs didn’t get to be on offense? Why do you do this to me Fish? All you’ve done is make me look like an idiot. How do you live with yourself :D:mad:

Well I guess that's kind of part of the discussion too tbh.
I just have a problem with a crucial part of the game (who gets first possession in overtime) being determined 100% based off luck.

If both teams were guaranteed to get an equal chance to score then I wouldn't care who got the ball first and wouldn't care if they used a coin to decide.

Since one team gets a distinct advantage over the other (first offensive possession) I don't think luck (coin toss) should decide who gets that advantage. I think there should be some kind of competition to decide who gets that advantage.

Well if they keep OT the same, why should one team automatically get an advantage? Why not give both teams the same chance to get an advantage?

For me it's quite simple.
Either make the teams earn the advantage through some form of competition, or eliminate the advantage.

One team shouldn’t get an advantage for one specific game. I believe you should get rewarded with home field for your entire body of work in the regular season. There shouldn’t be any extra rewards added on because of an overtime game. IMO May the best team win on that occasion.

Cool then if you feel that way then you should want them to change overtime so that both teams get the ball no matter what. You agree that they should eliminate the advantage. I feel the same way. Eliminate the advantage or make the advantage earned through competition.

Because one team getting the ball and the other team not getting the ball is an advantage for one team for one specific game and an extra reward added on because of overtime.

The Chiefs not getting the ball wasn't an advantage earned by the Patriots via coin toss, it was earned by the Patriots via scoring a touchdown on the opening drive. The Chiefs had multiple chances to get off the field and weren't able to.

No, you misunderstood me. Team A should get home field advantage for having a better regular season. In that way they earned the advantage of home field over team B. If that game goes into overtime, Team A loses advantage because they didn’t beat team B. Doesn’t mean they should get extra advantage after the fact. After regulation teams should be on even draw as far as the rules go, and current rule states a coin toss, it fair because both teams have a 50/50 chance to get the ball first.
