What's new

2019 trade deadline discussion

Grayson looks like an excellent distributor. He has good handles, is a good shooter(historically), and is tall for the position of PG at 6'6". His court-awareness is fantastic. According to some articles I read he did well when playing PG in college. And we have Dante.

I love Ricky, but with how expensive he'll be it seems like he might, based on Grayson's success, be expendable.

It's possible, but it's hard to compare a rookie PG to a vet like Ricky that was stroking at the best clip of his career. There's nothing wrong with Grayson's shot that I can see, but he hasn't bee knocking them down. But this is probably due to his abductor and not getting the lift on his shot. Exum is even further behind than Grayson in terms of shooting and we've seen that we need it from the PG to be successful. After this upcoming season, I can see the Jazz giving Ricky a two year deal with a raise while grooming Exum/Grayson behind him. That's assuming Ricky continues his renaissance next year. But Exum and Grayson are going to be fighting for minutes behind him.

I don't think any player is untouchable. But players are going to have different values in relation to trades and their impact on the team.

Cornerstone (tradelolkthxbye):

Gobert
Mitchell

Very hard to replace due to impact for the contract value:

Rubio
Ingles
O'Neale

Hard to replace due to value to the team. They will probably move to the "very hard" category as the season wears on. Exum and Favors are here only because of the new contracts and I think Crowder will get his shot figured out with a full offseason and training camp with the Jazz:

Favors
Exum
Crowder

Unknown due to being new on the team:

Allen
Niang (probably)

Tradeable assets. These guys have value but we could part with them without much impact due to glut or available replacement players:

Bradley or Udoh (not both)
Burks
Neto

Unknowns:
Thabo (Only listed here because I don't know where or how he exactly slots in with the emergence of Royce last year. The Jazz will play him of course, just don't know how our wing glut helps or hurts him.)
McCree (who?)

We'll see what happens.

Nah. If they are trading AD it means they are starting over. They'd want Mitchell.

Makes sense. Could also be they still think they can compete and want to try and find equal value for him. But the biggest likelihood would be them saying "screw it" and rebuild. But personally, I wouldn't trade Mitchell for AD. Not discounting AD, but Mitchell has endeared himself so much to the fanbase and his potential is MVP (to me) that fans would riot the second the deal broke.

Based off of reality and what is actually out there, I think our "untouchables" or "probably wouldn't trade at all because nobody is available and worth it" list is what I put before:
Gobert
Rubio
Ingles
Exum
Mitchell
Grayson
O'Neale

If Paul George wanted out halfway through the year, maybe we trade one of those guys. Maybe. In that highly unlikely scenario, maybe.

The only true untouchable is Mitchell. He wouldnt be traded for any other player in the league. Gobert is 99% in that range. I think Ingles is close. Along with being a very good SF and one of the best 3pt shooters in the league, he's the glue guy. He keeps everyone loose and you can tell his teammates really like him.

To those hoping we get a great FA in 2019, I hate to disappoint, but it ain't gonna happen. Favors will be back and so will Rubio. The only chance Utah has of landing a good veteran is at the deadline, with some combination of expirings (Burks, Thabo, Udih, Neto), picks or other assets. Miss at the deadline and Lindsey may look to use the MLE in 2019.

Ya Mitchell definitely and gobert is close enough that I think labeling him as untouchable is fine. Jingles is close to that designation but I wouldn’t be shocked if we traded him and some other stuff to get a top all star type guy if one were available.

I’m with ya. I’m hard pressed to think of anyone in the nba I would be ok trading Mitchell for. If Lebron was 5 years younger and on a long term deal I would do it. Maybe KD on a long term deal. (And both players wanting to be here)

That’s about it really.

Unless we are playing terrible basketball with a terrible trade deadline record, I honestly don't think we trade anybody but Burks and Udoh. And even if we do have a terrible record, we probably still have faith we could pull it together in time for the playoffs like we did last year.

Agreed, but we've seen what this team does healthy. The only way we are horrible is if injuries strike again.

I think we have 2 legit untouchables, unless it is for a top-3 player. And those 2 are Mitchell and Gobert. But if NO comes knocking and asks for Mitchell and change for AD you have to consider it. But other than a scenario like that, they are going nowhere.

Anyone else is, and should be, fair game, if it brings the right player to bridge the chasm between the 4-8 slots and the 1,2,3 of GS, Houston and likely the Lakers at this point, as much as I hate typing that.

This year I plan on being at every game the Jazz are in town to play the Clips or the LA-bron Fakers. In jerseys if I can mortgage my car or something to buy them. Freaking $100+ is a joke.

I would guess that what Utah does is entirely dependent on:

(1) how the team is doing at the trade deadline; and
(2) how Favors, Exum, and Rubio are playing.

Rubio could be absolutely necessary or expendable depending on how Exum develops. If both Exum and Rubio are doing great, one of them would be an excellent trade piece in a package for the “third piece.”

I also still think Exum, Rubio, or Favors could be the third piece. If that happens, great! If not, we have a lot of flexibility to make moves.

My ideal would be keeping all of those guys and bringing in Tobias Harris for the expirings and pick(s) at the deadline and then a good MLE signing during the summer to round out our championship squad.
