Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (democratic socialist) wins NY primary

-I never said something genetically modified posing health risks, I spoke to the impacts of using RoundUp (which you then retorted that you were most in danger of, doing the actual farming).

-History will be on my side on that one; additionally, companies like Monsanto are unethical and capitalism caricatures that hurt farmers at the end of the day.

-confront the meat of my post, instead of this dumb straw man and distracting from the topic at hand.

I swear you did. Someone diary queen this. You went on a massive anti-gmo rant a year or two ago and it wasn't just glyphosate.

I'm glad you seem much more reasonable now

Farmers are stupid and cant calculate increased yield revenue to Bt seed costs. They are in the growing business not the accounting business. How are they supposed to weigh their crop? What, we expect them to become NIST specialists too now? What's next, expecting them to manage their water rights like some Wall Street stock broker?

I feel like I remember it being how he wouldn’t eat them, but wouldn’t flat out say they were bad. I’m too lazy to look.

Yes Dala, as somebody who applies chemicals, I am more at risk that the consumer eating the food. The risk for both parties is quite low though. Glyphosate ain’t causing no issues. And I’ve been farming for quite a while, and Monsanto’s hasn’t hurt me yet. If anything they’ve helped the modern day farmer, but your rhetoric won’t allow for that.

It’s exactly why we need the government, Cy, and Dala to tell us what to do. I ain’t got that kinda brain power.

I'm surprised the anti-Monsanto populism is still [mouth] breathing. They didn't even trigger all this, it was Britain's own outbreak of mad cow disease that got the anti-GMO ball rolling. All was needed was an American corporation to paint a bullseye on and turn mlb or into highschool's new favorite controversial "research" paper. Add in the fact that Monsanto seeds outcompeted European production and you get the funding of corporations and companies backing nationalist protectionism rhetoric and anything else that could be used to fear monger. "Monsanto is trying to play God!".

I thought most of the hate for Monsanto was because of their litigiousness? Who cares about the dumbass Europeans and their anti-GMO stance.

Fwiw, while a pain in the ***, their seed contracts are valid. People just tried to cheat.

I know what I said— genetically modifying an organism to be used for consumption doesn’t in and of itself cause any negative affects unless (and it’s rare) the inserted protein is an allergen for the consumer. I did my degree in genetics, my term project was on GMOs and Golden Rice.

My pessimism with the safety of these plants comes from the associated pesticide usage. I understand that organic agriculture still uses certain pesticides (etc etc) but to me there’s numerous reasons why I keep it local and generally organic vs not. Generallr, the best arguments against GMO crops are economical, ethical, and ecological.

Why is it a pain in the ***? I've read one and it seemed pretty simple and straightforward.

It’s a pain the *** because I’d like to re-grow the seed, but I cannot. The contract itself is easy, and the only people who break it are doing so very intentionally. But yay! **** a company for protecting their product and going after consumers that break their rules.

@dalamon I would love to not use pesticides. They’re rather expensive.

But come up with an alternative to growing a decent crop without them. You gonna hand weed out 10,000 acres for me? I’d have to employ hundreds of people just to do that, and I can assure you, that would put me in a net negative money wise (if I could even find that many people). Unless you and Cy wanna come out and do that (I guarantee you don’t). And that’s just weeds. What am I going to do about diseases? Look man, I work in the seed industry. There’s a reason most organic producers get their seed from conventional growers.

No offense, but you don’t know jack **** about farming, or pesticides, and it shows.

If other farmers have figured it out I'm sure you can too. Keep beating your chest and saying "you don't know JACK ****", i'm sure it makes you feel good inside. You physically cannot have a conversation in good faith.

Oh really? What farmers have figured it out? I have no problem trying new things. We’ve taken many ideas from organic farmers over the years and used them. Whatever works, works. I just want the best end product possible, that’s my goal.

Please understand that I’m not talking 5, 10, even 50 acre hobby farms. I’m talking large scale agriculture...the kind that feeds the world. How do you keep weeds out on a 10,000 acre farm without pesticides? How do I keep disease out? Certainly different crop varieties help, but only to a point. What would farmers that get late blight in their potatoes do without chemicals? How do I keep insects from decimating my crop?

So, since you know so much, prove it. Find examples. I’m all ears. Seriously, I am. You talk a big game...back it up.

Oh and one more.

Why do the majority of organic growers purchase conventionally grown seed rather than organic seed?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

no desire to have this conversation with you when a) you're still lacing your posts with disrespect, b) we've had this exact conversation on this very forum on the upscalability of organic agriculture. no desire to have it again, feel free to search back in these threads and refer to my past arguments.

LMAO twinkie just rolled over. I was expecting you to tell farmers to smile and politely ask weeds to leave.

Would the Organic Seed Alliance be a good enough reference for you?

https://stateoforganicseed.org/

Veggie Farmers growing 10 acres or under use 75% organic seed. Growers with 480 acres+ use 20% organic seed. Almost like the larger a farm is, the more difficult it is to employ small scale practices.

Now I’m providing links, and facts to your questions. But you want to say I’m the one that doesn’t want to have the conversation in good faith?! Come on. You bet your *** I’m being disrespectful. You constantly talk about this subject like you know everything, you refuse to answer any questions, and you have a general air of superiority despite your lack of knowledge on the subject. So yeah, I’m being disrespectful because you’ve earned it.
