Added to Calendar: 04-18-22

After watching the videos of Luka’s workout yesterday, I’d be a little surprised if he plays at all in this series.

It’s a tricky injury. A win tonight might seal the deal… if they rush him back he is at high risk of re-injury… if he waits until the series is 3-0 it’s likely too late.

It’s not an injury you can truly test without some risk of re-injury… it makes complete sense he isn’t jumping or cutting. He may be pain free right now but engaging those muscle groups may have to be something he waits to do until he has to.

We have friends in the Netherlands so we’d hang there for a while… that sounds like my kinda place. She’d want to hit Italy… she’s not into Paris but I’m sure we’d go there. I’m just more into nature than man made stuff… I’d rather roam the countryside in the Netherlands than see some old buildings where stuff happened.

Puerto Rico sounds perfect.
Which part of the Netherlands? The dutch landscape is pretty boring. If you ever feel like going over the border to Belgium let me know. Beer on me.

He's not gonna play.

Win tonight, and ensure a sweep. This series is close to 99% being over.

Can't ask for anything better. IF the Pelicans can steal one from Phoenix, we'll have more rest than the Suns. Pretty big deal.

The only way the Mavs have a chance is if Jazz shoot below their average and Mavs shoot above their average. They can't rebound against us and get second chance points.

That is hard for the Mavs to do without Luka drawing the defense and getting others Mavs open shots.

They are near Amsterdam… I’m sure we’d be moving all throughout those areas. I’m just not very much into the big populated cities. We go to San Francisco a few times a year and it’s pretty fun for a couple days or to see a baseball game but it’s within a couple hours driving and I’d prefer to move down the coast a bit and go to Monterey, Carmel, Santa Cruz. Cities are exhausting… I can take an couple hour hike and feel invigorated and relaxed. Flower fields and green hills are my jam. It’s why I love Hawaii… so many 2-3 hour adventures that include the most beautiful natural scenery you’ve ever seen. I’d rather go 1.5 hrs to Tahoe than 1.5 hrs to SF.

I think he can at some point here… game 3 or 4 I think he could come back and be close to himself… he would be right in the normal recovery range. If we are up 2-0 or 3-0 it changes things on their calculus. 1-1 gives them hope… 2-1 and then Luka comes back??? I’d be pretty nervous given what we’ve seen from this team.

He's definitely going to play at some point, probably in game 3 or 4.

There is literally no excuse to lose this game tonight from the Jazz' perspective.

Agreed. One of the reason I really loved the Reno area. Easy access to Tahoe and many other outdoor places, and the cities that were around to explore were small and had a lot of history. So many great hikes around Tahoe. Also loved spending time just walking around Virginia City, historic vibe and quiet streets, as long as you weren't just on main street.

There's still a lot of good outdoors stuff in Italy, depending where you are. Check out the Amalfi coast in Italy. Also a lot of places in Switzerland. Europe still has a lot of good stuff to do but because there is so much history that definitely gets attention, too. It's pretty cheap to fly within Europe.

Kauai is awesome. When we went the north was partially closed for mudslides but we paddle a small river that went through a nature reserve. We have our own boards so it cost like $3 a person. Hana lei was super dope. We did the most amazing paddle and hike to this waterfall… it took a good part of the day but was just amazing. We also rafted down the old sugar field irrigation canals which was super fun. Would like to go again when north is open.

Maui is our favorite. Perfect mix of adventure and chill beaches. Kauai is a little slow at times. Oahu is by far my least favorite… not into Waikiki and the beaches were meh.

What's the hiking you recommend on Maui? My hang-up with Hawaii is that it's a place we've been to more than anywhere else. We've done Oahu twice (though we stay nowhere near Honolulu) and we did the Big Island once when I had a conference I attended, so it was mostly paid for. I wasn't a huge fan of the Big Island (relative to smaller towns on Oahu). We did do some hiking on the north side that was cool. We've never been to Maui or Kauai so if we ever go back, it will definitely be one of those.

I had only been to Tahoe when I was a little kid (too early to remember) and we would go there a few times when we lived in the Bay Area. It's one we'd like to hit at some point because we can drive there within a reasonable amount of time. May be a bit before we can get there, though. Anything good in Reno?

Tonight is an important game. If we lose this one, I think the psychological impact on our team's fragile psyche of having Luka come back into a tied series may make us too nervous to perform. Win tonight and it's a totally different narrative in our collective consciousness.

Agreed. Maui is just fantastic. I spent a week on the Hana side once and it was the definition of paradise, although that side does lack the amenities that most are used to. Other than that it's really what I think of as the classic Hawaii experience.

Reno has a nice river walk downtown, that is really nice in the evening. Good restaurants along the way with patio dining and such.

Depending on when you go there are a lot of fun activities and events going on. Hot August Nights is a huge car show, they run a parade downtown, lots of activities at different venues. Live music, food vendors, and the cars are mostly classics. It is a lot of fun if you like that kind of thing and can go that time of year.

Another one is the rib cookoff held by the Nugget casino. This involves a bunch of national rib and barbecue joints coming together as a competition, placed like Famous Dave's and Sweet Baby Rays, along with smaller groups and full-time traveling bbq competition teams. They all set up their food trucks and are open to the public to buy ribs and such. They have an area where you can purchase a "table" in like an octoberfest-style tent, which allows you and several guests to get a wrist band, and a reserved table of course, and be allowed to get ribs from all the vendors and alcohol and other drinks, a fun way to enjoy the venue and the event. Usually our work would purchase several tables for us to give to people to attend, in raffles and such. They used to have an amateur division and one year my friend and I came in 2nd in the amateur division. That was crazy, but fun.

Otherwise Reno is just a nice laid back town. The "strip" is nice to visit as it has a lot of the big casino action without the crushing crowds of Vegas. It has a bunch of nice museums, like the automobile museum, and a natural history museum. They are smaller, but with nice displays and a casual and relaxing atmosphere.

Also, lots of great sushi places. As far as I know Reno is one of the originations of AYCE sushi, as we had it there almost everywhere and when we went to other cities hardly saw AYCE at all in the early days. And they did it really well with a good dozen places offering very similar menus and great quality sushi. In fact I noticed after we moved back to Utah that many of the newer places in Utah were copying Reno menus and I know at least a couple of places were direct transplants of Reno restaurants. Have you ever been to a place with a "mountain" roll of some kind, or "upside-down shrimp", or a "Wayne's" or "Jason" hand-roll? Those were common in the Reno area a long time ago and we only slowly saw those kinds of menu items trickling into other cities, particularly the SLC area, after we moved. Sushi Ya in south salt lake (by the 215 I think), is directly a copy of one of our favorite placed in Reno called Aloha Sushi, I talked to the owner when we first went there and found out his dad had opened Aloha Sushi in Reno years before. That was kind of fun. Most of the Sushi Ya or Sushi Yah places in the area were opened by members of the family, and were all a little different, like there is one in Layton, where we usually go when visiting family in the Ogden/Layton area. Unfortunately Sushi Ya's quality has really dipped in recent years as I think ownership has changed, but the one in Orem, I think, is still the same group and good quality. Anyway I could go on and on about that.

I recommend a stop in Reno especially during the events they have going on, or just to spend a day hanging out if you are going to Tahoe.

Do Maui first with kids. It’s amazing for that. Kauai is adventures and hikes and much less resorty… I’ll be honest Oahu kinda sucked in comparison.

Maui you have road to Hana that has a couple small hikes. One is a bit of a secret still. If you go I’ll look up the instructions… we generally only see a couple people on that one.

You have Haleakala and there is a canyon inland that has a nice little hike. There is a blowhole that’s just a little ways away from Lahaina. The beaches are just amazing there. All have a little different feel for different activities.

If you go to Kauai there are a couple of rural/ somewhat hidden gems. I always have to look it up so hit me up if you go there… paddle/waterfall hike, glass beach, paddle through the wildlife reserve.
