Ectya (Enes CanTear You Apart) has suggested we start a blitz tournament for JazzFanz. I can organize and keep track of scores if enough people are interested. We could try it with as little as four players or as many as eight or more. I have in mind a double round-robin with a five minute time control for each player, so if we have four players you would play each person twice, black and white, for a total of six games.

The time commitment is only about fifteen minutes (twenty maximum) to play one player twice. If we try to finish all the games in a week or so there should be plenty of time for players to arrange to be online for three separate fifteen minute windows. The two people playing each other would make their own arrangements for a window that works for both and then post the results here.

Since ectya and myself are interested we need just two more players to get things going. The suggested website (lichess.org) is easy and intuitive to play; one player goes to the site, starts a game, sets the time controls, and then posts a link here (the link is done automatically by pressing the "play a friend" button), the other player clicks on the link at the arranged time, and away you go.

Blitz is a great way to sharpen your tactics while playing a wide variety of games in a short amount of time. By nature, the games are much more likely to be wild and aggressive as both players try to win by force before time expires. It should be fun, so no reason not to at least try a few blitz games! Btw, I have played a few more blitz games a few days ago, only to find out that I really suck at it. So it will be totally for fun from my perspective.

Sorry. . . . yes, you got it right.

"retreating your bishop" is something I've seen as a good move on your part, it prevents me from picking up an advantage next move by taking it, although most scenarios of that are just even trades, your bishop in it's present position prevents my "pawn advance" on that side.

Used to be, my biggest fear was to let a file go open. . .. .

I am just as vulnerable as you are with this, if not more so. And just "trading down" with my King facing those two pawns alone wouldn't be OK either.. . . . and in case you didn't notice, I really don't have the option of just evading you on this turn.

hmmmm. . . . not sure I follow that. . . . let me see. . . .

I meant the corner pawn by your King, opening up an escape route for your King that would be safe with only one of your major pieces supporting the most vulnerable pawn.

The e5 move is feared on my side because it closes a gap for my King moving forward. You would need to support your other pawn with someone, though, and those pawns are now on black squares which can't be supported by your Bishop.

I might be mixed up on the coordinates though. The e5 move on your part is the pawn further away from my King. That move also restricts my f file Rook from taking a position in support of my c pawn, allowing movement for another piece currently employed in that support.

I could not take a stand on any other move.

If I moved that Rook off the "f"file, your Rook is supported by your Bishop in checking me at f7, and then would capture my h pawn . I could not rally my other Rook to oppose an attack at this point, and if I interpose the f Rook you're in a better position to trade down and advance a pawn to Queen.

I do better to take this trade because your attack has disintegrated and I am in position to catch up on pawns, possibly also trading Bishops. . . .

From the outset, I have had the idea of trading down as fast as possible while gaining an advantage in advanced pawns in company of the King. My idea of "attack" consisted essentially of achieving a Queened pawn first. . . . .
