Denmark becomes 4th country in Europe to ban full face coverings in public places

you never know under Trump... some said Trump will never happen as well...

It would never happen in the US. Zero chance. I would bet the house on it. Just completely different outlook on religion compared to Europe.

**** like this only feels Muslims feel less Danish, less French— the path to all Muslims distancing themselves from salafist orthodoxy is living in a society and culture that accepts them for who they are, and doesn’t attempt to construct a narrative of the faith being irreconcilable with western values.

Put simply, I find these moves anti-feministic & an appeal to emerging far-right populism in Europe.

@Wes

I’m good! Schools out for the summer. I’m doing some research full time on pregnant homeless women and the children that they give birth to— looking at whether a sort of intervention has impact on the children (and actually results in cost savings to the taxpayer in the long run).

As for if I’ve gotten laid yet— well, I’m turning 25 in a couple months. To make it this far sans-sex would frankly be a miracle

Are most of those women... a) Raped? b) Married to their homeless husband (and perhaps other children)? c) Knocked up through casual, consensual sex with some other homeless guy?

Idiotic. Just one more law taking the smallest bit of freedom away.

Even if this did pass here in the US the Supreme Court would strike it down on religious freedom grounds. As they should.

Now, I am fine with certain private functions having such a ban. But no thanks on Gov. laws/policies to this effect.

I see these things and all I can think is these two quotes:

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me."

And

"Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I’d say it’s mostly option 3 or a 4th option, not completely consensual sex with a man who has access to housing, so a woman will barter it to stay housed.

Rape is more of a thing with teenagers or homeless youth. But these sorts of things really vary from community to community

What do you think of the ban on circumcision in Sweden (I'm pretty sure that law is in effect)?

I do not think it is in law yet. There was proposition to ban it in Finland but Jews started crying bloody murder so it is still in works. I think this should be banned for non medical reasons to be honest. If religion requires it - let kid grow up to 18 years and make that decision. Now it looks like poor kid has no choice and it is forced upon him by his parents.

Stoked expressed that he views the burka law as oppressive. I'm curious to see what he deems acceptable, and on what criteria.

WRT feminism, it seems more of a mixed bag to me. I definitely agree it's an appeal to far-right populism as well as an impingement on the rights of the women.

dunno bout this. Should a westerner expect to be able to dress how ever they like when they are in a Muslim country ?

Why shouldn't parents have a right to raise their **** trophies into the style they are? They are your children and you are responsible to raise them to be constructive adults. Decisions have to be made. If a hijab is customary but not forcibly then why not? If it's forced and taking away from women then why? That's a grey area that needs discretion, discretion that won't be applied equally just like any other civil law.

If you are policing what a women can or can’t wear, you are de-facto robbing her of her rights. It’s orientalistic to assume that every woman rocking a burka is doing so because a man is forcing her to.
