What's new

DPOY 2018

Winning awards is about one's accomplishments and the general context, ie who else is there, what they have done this year, their reputation, etc. For Gobert the firs part was a problem with all his injuries, but with what the Jazz have been doing lately, the box is ticked if he avoids an injury in the last 10/12 games and the Jazz don't collapse.

Now for the second criteria, which is very often decisive : Oftentimes a player will win an award because "it's his turn"... Kawhi is out, Green won it last year hasn't been as impressive, giving to KD or AD whereas their biggest achievements are on Offense would be a bit weird. It is very possible that many voters just think "yeah it's Gobert's turn anyway".

So my take is that if he doesn't get injured and the Jazz don't collapse, ie go something like 8-4 in their last 12 games, he will win it.

He played enough games to finish top ten in total blocks. He is currently tied for 7th and may finish top 5. he has played enough and this isn't an aberration. Everyone knows that this is who Rudy is, this is who he has been before this season . He is a defensive beast. He changes the oppositions offensive game plan more than any other player. If anything his "time off" is evidence of his outrageous impact. Snubbing RG would be flat out wrong. There is one choice for DPOY. It should be unanimous.

He absolutely should be dpoy our record with, and without him is staggering, and our defense with and without is equally if not more staggering, and quite frankly, he should win the award every year. No player affects a game defensively like he does. We were in the 12th seed, now 5th because of his defense. We were dead in the water with him out. Now, we are in it because of his defensive domination.

He better be named dpoy. Otherwise the NBA is robing him of HIS award!! Period.

#8 Donovan Mitchell 0.053

...and if you take out Kawhi, since he's only played 9 games...

#19 Ricky Rubio
#20 Joe Ingles

Crazy that we have four of the leagues top 20 defenders, statistically speaking, on one roster.
Yeah, Mitchell has passed up Simmons on that ranking now as well.

Although that stat is more about the team than the individual. We have so many in the top because of good team defense and Gobert.

Rudy impacts that dramatically. Really raises the level of his teammates.

And Rubio was awful defensively early, so idk about that stat tbh.

I think Gobert deserves this award again. He is dominantly the best defender in the league and I dont think it is really that close.

If it is just on the defensive side of the ball every team would pick Gobert 1st for their defense. If it was just a defensive possession every coach would put Gobert on the court over any player in the league.

But it would be a record for DPOY of least games played for Gobert to win this year. But I think his historic impact on defense justifies it. Gobert missing games has shown how much he impacts our defense. Especially considering that when Gobert was out we had Favors starting at the 5 and he is a good defender. Favors would probably be the best big man defender on 1/2 or more of the teams in the NBA. Having both Favors and Gobert though makes our defense really good and versatile as well though.

The difference between Gobert and #8 (Donovan Mitchell) in defensive winshares is the same as between #8 and #79 (Royce O'neal). There's sort of a Utah'vinci Code harmony to those numbers, especially because if you drop down by that same difference one more time you land smack dab on top of the #285 player, a guy who has only logged 2 minutes for this entire season, Gordon Haywood.

It sucks that Rudy has been the most dominant defensive force in the league for 2 years now at least and will quite possibly not even get one DPOY award. There's more and more buzz about it from national media, so I think it's possible that he can still win. It's all about the narratives with this kind of award, and Rudy actually has a pretty good one if he can get a little more sympathetic press coverage.

**** the missed games. His impact is like no other on the defensive end. The Jazz PR machine really needs to sell this, as the award means something for him and the team in general.

Plus in terms of minutes Embid has played 360 more, or 7.5 games more. That's not enough to me to overcome the impact Gobert has made.
