Expansion

Our team will be targeted for the expansion draft for sure. We are set to have a lot of young players with upside over the next few years.
If memory serves, we would be allowed to protect 8 players. If we have less on contract, we only have to leave 1 unprotected. The expansion team(s) will only be allowed to target teams once and those teams that have players selected by the expansion teams received a TPE. By the time teams are to set to roll, we'll have an idea who our core would be, so I wouldn't be overly worried about leaving scraps.

If memory serves, we lost both Del Curry and Mo Williams in various expansion drafts. They were probably the two best players taken in expansion.

We traded Dell for Mel Turpin and Daryl Dawkins and Mo Williams signed with Milwaukee.

I was just reading a 2003 post from a brand new Charlotte Bobcats forum. They thought for sure Pavlovic was going to be protected.

Yeah, and though he didn’t end up being amazing, it was cataclysmically stupid as he had shown a pretty large amount of promise and there was no way Charlotte was going to try to swipe Collins. It was one of a huge string of dumbass KOC decisions that he got so many passes on because he was able to hide behind Jerry and the Jazz franchise’s large amount of success.

And DL getting **** for the Charlotte/Hayward contract was a KOC special. That was DL’s first off-season with the reins and he learned that from the master. Every single restricted free agent got the same treatment — don’t be proactive, just let them go sign with another team, let them set the market, then match (or don’t if you’ve shot yourself in the foot). See also Paul Millsap and Wes Matthews.

Moneyball. Save the money, give up the ball, continuity, butts in the seats...profit??

Prior to the day of the draft, the following trades were made and resulted in exchanges of future draft picks between the teams, along with a particular agreement in the expansion draft.

The Charlotte Bobcats acquired the second pick in the 2004 Draft and agreed to select Predrag Drobnjak in the expansion draft from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for the fourth and 33rd picks in the 2004 Draft.

The Charlotte Bobcats agreed to select Jahidi White from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a future first-round pick and cash considerations.

The Bobcats also traded Pavlovic to Cleveland for a lottery protected 1st after the draft as well.
