Extending Howard?

The board hated it. The vast majority didnt think he would bring anything to the team, would just impede development of the young guys, be a bad influence, and that he was just a chucker.

Again, why is this sad? The guy sucked the last two seasons.

#1 I always liked the signing. He has proven talent, his public issues were early in his career, and it was a small risk (1 year @ $3 mil) to determine his health.

#2 The thread title sounded like a name of a *** movie.

Everything surrounding Howard situation makes one thing clear; the Jazz are going to get a lot out of him this year, and after that, some team is going to regret signing him. My crystal ball says some contender is going to eat AT LEAST his last year on his next contract.
This.

You see this sort of thing happen constantly, contract year - very good season, then some team overspends and ends up with an aging wing w/declining athleticism who never reaches the level of play he was at before the contract was signed.

Howard for Billups?
Howard for Bledsoe?

I could see the jazz and LAC doing the trade for Bledsoe! If the clippers are in the top 4 of the west Howard could really help them on a playoff run and Bledsoe is burried on the bench right now!

I consider Marquette to be one of the premiere colleges in the country as far as maximizing player abilities, getting them to compete night in and night out, getting them to be multi-dimensional, play within the confines of a team, and in short, teach them. Excellent program.

Howard has been terrific. What's sad is 99% of the board didn't even like the signing.

I didnt mind the signing was indifferent. I have been a fan of Howard coming out of college. He is who I wanted the jazz to draft that year instead of pavlovic.

I was against the signing, more because of his off court issues than for what he would do to the rookies. And it's not all roses, he's a bit of a black hole.

Having said that, he at over 30 is one of the most athletic players on the team, which surprises me for a previously badly injured vet, and he can absolutely create his own shot, which is something even less can do. He still has enough left to give him a reasonable 2 to 3 year extension if he is willing to keep the per year down. Even better would be a flat or descending contract. That way the last year where his speed declines wouldn't hurt as much

I am a believer in minutes played more than I am years old in judging players. I don't know how high his minutes played is, but the time he lost due to injury won't push that back, so he's really a year or two younger basketball wise than his age would let on.
