What's new

Following potential 2017 draftees...

I hope it's not Lydon at 24. I just don't see him ever developing into more than a backup SF/PF role player who is probably just a 3 point specialist. I think that's his ceiling. And with multiple players who have higher upsides likely to be available I just can't talk myself into that selection if it happens.

I just don't get the Lydon love at all

Can we please just draft Bell? He's the enforcer and competitive player we need next to Gobert. He's a physical specimen whiteout having played one game in the NBA. Please, just let the jazz draft this dude!!!

One of the best shooters in the draft. Plays within himself.. somewhat athletic. Decent passer... I mean we are picking in the 20s there isn't a whole lot to get. If he had that plus he was an elite defender he's a lotto pick.

Or we could get a guy like Bell, who will get putbacks, play defense, get offensive putbacks and just add to our defensive identity, while playing that Booker enforcer role. To me Lydon is a one dimensional player. Who sits outside.

Leaf vs Lydon

Lydon is the better shooter, over 80% ft compared to 68% for leaf

Lydon attempted some monster dunks he came up just short on Leaf would have finished. But I give shooting to Lydon.

Is Lydon the the next Kanter? No, much better D

I don't think Lydon falls to 30.

From the Sixers Private workout:

But lack of height doesn’t seem to have ever been a problem for him. Mason exploded in his final year at Kansas, averaging 20.9 points and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from beyond the arc en route to being named the 2017 Naismith College Player of the Year.

During his workout with the Sixers Mason flashed all the tools that helped him earn that recognition: speed, solid shooting and composure in the paint. The Virginia native knocked down a deep three over the outstretched arm of a defender before the buzzer in the three-on-three portion of the workout, and finished through Duke’s Amile Jefferson on a few occasions.

“[Frank] did a really nice job this morning,” Sixers vice president of player personnel Marc Eversley said. “He had a terrific year shooting the ball. He’s especially terrific in transition and finishes very well in the paint.”

Eversley think Mason has both the physical and mental tools to make up for what he lacks in the size department.

“I think speed, quickness, toughness,” Eversley said about Mason’s strengths. “He’s courageous, very courageous. He does a lot with his body.”

Mason’s sneaky atheltic, and he’ll be the first to tell you “not too many people know that”. At the combine he posted a max vertical leap of 42 inches, good for third best behind Hamidou Diallo and Frank Jackson.

Also found this interesting. Frank's favorite player? AI? Spud webb? Isiah Thomas? Naw, it's Dirk

Bell is one dimensional too... just his dimension is defense.

Lydon is long... gets deflections and blocks. If he gets quicker laterally and stronger he may be great on that end.

I like Bell, but let's not pretend he is flawless... he isn't particularly long. He doesn't box out well, so he's an undiscliplined rebounder. If better Booker is his ceiling then Lydon may have more upside. If Lydon is a similar player to Ryan Anderson that is much more valuable than a Booker type player.

I wonder how much better Lydon would look next to Ball? I think Lydon is a bit underated at the moment.

IMO I don't think he translates physically in the NBA to do anything more then shoot 3's. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion. I don't see him as a rebounder or defender at the NBA level, and think he will struggle to finish at the rim or play with his back to the basket.

Bell IMO fits great next to Gobert. Can guard in the post thanks to his natural athletic ability and competitive fire he has a lot of that dog in him, he's relentless. He was one of the best shot blockers in college basketball, can guard small ball 4's on the perimeter, and allows the jazz to go super wall at the 5 like Dreymond does. I believe he will at least improve his 3pt shot to Dreymond level. Already a decent midrange game and has a face up game and improving postup game, and sees the floor well setting up teammates. Just because he's not a gifted offensive player doesn't mean he's one dimensional in any way.

Bell does everything Lydon does but threes
