Fords Draft Grade for the Jazz

UTAH JAZZ | GRADE: B+
Round 1: None

Round 2: Kevin Murphy (47)

Analysis: The Jazz have a knack for finding talented players from small schools, and I think they might have found another one in Murphy. He was one of my sleeper picks in the second round. He was a big-time scorer in college, is an excellent shooter with deep range (a big need for them in the backcourt) and is very poised. I think this is a nice pick at No. 47.

Thanks Verlin.

It's hard to F up a draft when your only pick is #47, and teams are asking for your franchise player to draft Lillard.

The draft is retarded in that sense. Everyone one wants the moon. Thats why I had little hope for a trade up and dont blame KOC for not doing it. Giving up Favors for anyone in this draft outside of Davis would have been a blight on this franchise that would have taken years to overcome.

KOC's inactivity last night and the tremors concerning Mo are more (upon more upon more) signs that KOC is fully committed to next summer's crop of free agents.

That's a pretty good grade considering.

I'm happy with our pick. Judging by what the Cavs got over the last 2 drafts (Zeller, Waiters, Thompson) and what we got (Kanter, Burks, Murphy) I'm pretty content.

Not ecstatic or super happy, but content.

Don't forget Irving.

Don't forget the Jazz's excellent grades from 2008:

Utah Jazz
Grade: A-

Round 1: Kosta Koufos (23)

Round 2: Ante Tomic (44), Tadija Dragicevic (53)

Analysis: The Jazz wanted to add some size, and they did. Koufos is a steal here -- he's a little like the second coming of Mehmet Okur, a big guy who likes to face the basket but who can mix it up inside. He was up and down as a freshman, but the talent is there.

Tomic reminds me of a young Pau Gasol. He's very skilled, but he lacks the strength to play in the post. He'll stay in Croatia the next two years, but down the road he could really be a prospect.
Again - you can't possibly grade a draft until 3-4 years down the road.

Don't forget Irving.
Uncle Drew was the better pick.

this.

with or without mo, it's starting to look like the jazz are prepping for 2013. which likely means no al trade, no devin trade, no extension for paul, no bringing over tomic now (which could mean never, if he signs another multi-year deal over there), no oj mayo, etc.

they're going to play conservative for a year and basically be ok with another 45-win season, and then go into next summer with multiple draft picks, 40 million in cap space, and a nice young core. which makes perfect sense from a rebuilding standpoint, but still disappoints me for the short term.

If we get Mo and our young guys improve, we should be better than a 45 win team.

The "niceness" of that core at the time largely hinges on whether there are opportunities being bogarted and pissed on by not very BIG AL.

ok, perhaps, but not a contending team. i just mean that it looks like the jazz aren't making any bold moves this year, and are content to have pretty much the same team.

all so they can make bolder moves in 2013, so it's bittersweet... but i had a plan for this offseason, and clearly KOC hasn't called me up to ask my opinion.

We can make it to the 2nd round, which is about the same amount of success the Dwill/Boozer era had.

Favors is starting so I seriously doubt the jazz stand pat. I think you are wrong.
