What's new

Gail Miller will be the Governor of the Jazz

That probably means it was okay for the U.S. to do it and for us to now not think it matters...

I mean, most people don't even know that Slavery is still going on in Mali. Where are the Netflix documentaries? Where are the boycotts? Is this kind of slavery OK because white people aren't involved?

I understand why the term owner is a sensitive word for the league. It isn't crazy to have an alternative preferred title for owners. My issues are 1) it feels like they are acting like the title "owner" is racist. Rather than demonize one title they should just promote the other. 2) "Governor" is a stupid replacement title.

What they should have done is just started referring to owners as "equity partners", which is a term that is used in business to represent ownership (can find it on many annual financial statements). They could have never made it about race (or stupidly demonized the phrase "owner") and say that the change is to recognize that owners are one part of the NBA that needs to work with other interested partners (media, players, refs, arena, etc.).

So the answer to my post is yes, gotcha.

Obviously no kind of slavery is acceptable and it doesn't matter at all the skin colors involved.

But you seem to be saying very clearly that there's no need to be sympathetic to black people in the U.S. who are the descendants of people who were chattel slaves because black people also own slaves.

In the U.S. we have to deal with the reality of our own history. Period.

What black people do in other places only affects your view of what happened to black slaves in the U.S. if you're a racist. Because you'd have to be a racist to believe that because one black person doing something somewhere else is a valid way to judge all black people everywhere.

Nope, not what I am saying at all. If slavery is evil, and it is, then it is important not only to recognize the damage that it has caused, but fight it where it still remains. How much column inch of press coverage is going to go into this "owner/governor" nonsense as compared to ACTUAL freaking slavery that needs to be combatted. I'm OK with calling out both, but if people are going to focus on one, like they are doing here. It should probably be the right one.

I would guarantee you that 80% of the "woke" crowd knows nothing of modern day slavery in Africa. It's not hidden, and so the only answer I can come up with is that there is not enough power and graft available in fighting modern day slavery. . .

Probably the most slavery that exists in the world is sex work slavery, but you wanted really bad to make a point about black people having slaves.

The reason we don't talk about Mali is because it isn't the U.S. it isn't a western country. We are constantly blind to ANY issue outside the U.S. and absolutely blind to almost everything outside western civilization... unless we want to look down on the backwards barbarians.

You want to combat the slavery while ignoring the genocide? While ignoring the gender inequality? While ignoring the starving children? The lack of economic opportunity?

You respond to a racial issue in the U.S. with a plea to worry about slavery in Mali. Get the **** out! You're so incredibly insincere it's a joke. You don't give a ****. You're deflecting.

You don't get to judge anybody. You aren't more righteous, or good, or even more moral than the people you look down on. And yes, there IS more slavery. I brought up the "black slavery" because it is mentioned in the thread. And the "backwards barbarians" you sneering referenced at IS racism (although I don't think you were saying YOU believe that.)

Sex slavery is a thing, and it does get more mention, but not enough. Generally because, as I mentioned, there is no power or graft, or the ability to feel superior to someone else to be found in combatting it. Imagine if we were able to target people that contribute to modern day slavery just like we target the sixteen year old girl that put a picture of the antelope she shot on Instagram.

And yes, I don't want inequality, I don't want people starving, I like economic opportunity, which is why I generally oppose Socialism.
