Gobert/Rubio best PG combo since S&M?

Rubio and Gobert should do what Ball/Kuzma have done in SL. So many transition buckets.

Bring back the old school Stockton/Malone.

Not really. Kuzma can early release to get down the court. Gobert is rarely, if ever, going to be able to do that.

Although with the pace that Hill and Mack played, Gobert was often blocking or rebounding the ball and would be one of the first down the court. That was absolutely maddening to watch.
 
Wow much love already given to Rubio and he haven't played a minute as a Jazz.
Not saying it is wrong. It's just let's wait and see how it goes.
But we do all trust in Snyder to maximize his talents.
 
I think most people in this forum are already overrating and overhyping Rubio and he hasn't played even a single game for the Jazz. It is very problematic to make use of Rubio and at the same time have a great offense because of his somewhat limited skill set. Previously, Rubio was terrible at shooting from mid-range and from outside. Recently, though, he became good from mid-range but still remains subpar from outside. Well, if that wasn't problematic in itself, he absolutally can't finish around the rim. What made Stockton and Malone P&Rs very effective was that they could take advantage of whatever the defense gave them: not only Malone could drive and finish, but could also make the mid-range jumper; not only Stockton could take the long-2 but also - and that is specially important - drive to the basket and finish it. With Gobert and Rubio's P&Rs, Gobert wouldn't be able to make the mid-range jumper (at least for now, it seems) and Rubio wouldn't be able to drive and finish it. That's a given! Moreover, Rubio might not be able to hit the long-2 with any consistency. Hence, we are talking about a very defensible P&R with Gobert and Rubio.

Realistically, what I think it can be expected from Rubio are the following: (1) willingness to pass instead of forcing shots; (2) good overall passing that not necessarily would result in assists, since the defender doesn't have to guard him thightly; (3) lots of antecipations on defense, playing the passing lanes well. That's it, IMO.

I agree with not overhyping Rubio, but OFFENSE was never a problem for the Wolves when Rubio was healthy. He did GREAT with Pekovic as his Center. Pekovic a 6`11 bear with no leaping ability and range at all. It was pick & roll to death. They knew Rubio wasn't going to shoot, Pekovic was attacking the basket because he didn't have a jump shot, and still it worked again, and again, and again. Check youtube if you don't believe me. Unfortunately, Pekovic had a chronic foot issue and his career ended shortly.

Wolves' fans always dreamed of pairing Rubio with someone like Gobert. Good fit on offense. Perfect fit on defense.

Fortunately for the Jazz every one of your fears been disproven time and again.

Not only has Rubio lead great offenses with few outside threats around him (i.e. last year's 117.4 ORTG with a lineup as devoid of shooters as Rubio-Wiggins-Muhammad-Dieng-Towns), he's never had that problem of people sagging off him and playing the passing lanes. He's been incredibly consistent generating offense and assists throughout his career, and no matter what his success rate at the rim is, no one ever will let an opposing player get to the basket at will and dare him to make an uncontested layup. No coach would ever let that happen, and it doesn't.

Rubio is great at driving and attracting one and two defenders under the basket only to drop a pass at the last moment and give an easy bucket to the rolling man. We've talked about Pek, we can talk about Gorgui Dieng, we've even seen it with subpar finishers like Darko Milicic and Cole Aldrich. Whether he can finish or not, the threat of a layup is always there and is the first thing the defender focuses on around the rim. And Rubio is so deceiving with the ball and accurate with his passes even in tight quarters, he just continues to be prolific in those situations.

Everybody is on the rebound after Hayworthless dumped us. We would sleep with his ugly cousin to get the bad taste out of our mouths.
