What's new

Gobert...

I like Favors and his talent, but he plays like a ***** too often.

Rudy does not, and while he doesn't have the talent, he has intensity...and we badly need that.

It would be near the end of the list for me... I wouldn't ignore it but I'd spend more time in practice working on things he's good at and making them great. I've seen maybe five good lobs thrown to him this year... I've seen a million bounce passes thrown at his knees. He will never be great at handling that pass.

Between physical tools athleticism and work ethics he has as good a shot to be great as any of our young players.
Agree. I've seen the guards drive, get stopped, pick up their dribble and then try to bounce a pass under the hands of the opponent. And then hit Rudy in the lower calf. Gobert may not have the softest hands, but no way are those turnovers his fault. Guards need to get the ball up...WAY UP...if they're passing to Rudy.

I would really like to see if Favors can play with Rudy consistently.

If not, I could actually see a lineup of Kanter/Rudy working better than random PF/Favors. Favors can't guard centers, we need to give that thing up.

/I can't believe I just kinda advocated keeping Kanter over Favors. Let's pretend this never happened.
I think this is the elephant in the room no one involved with the Jazz wants to admit might be true. If rudy and favors can play together though, they could be really good.

The most interesting part of the entire concept is that everyone is skeptical that we can keep Kanter, Favors, and Gobert on the team, and that Gobert is the one that appears to be non-negotiable. That was crazy talk last year. . .

Of the lobs that have been thrown to him they aren't great... At least Exum trys it, but his lobs have too much air under them and it allows the D to catch up. Trey is the one that drives me crazy with this... I don't think I've seen him throw one.

Ingles dropped a great one the other night and Hood has thrown him a good one. He's shown he can catch and finish on lobs and on tip dunks... I'd like to see us throw it a couple more times... it will make Gobert more sticky on offense and will benefit everyone. It will also be fun to watch.

It looked promising at first last night but after Miami adjusted it just didn't work. I know it's early and we haven't seen enough of them together to make judgements but I think we would need elite shooters(ala GSW) to make it work.

The good news is that Favors is legit and on a great contract. We should be able to pick up an important piece for him not just a role player. It sucks because we all have a lot of love for Favors but it may be the best thing for the Jazz and Favors' career.

It is a testament to these guys' character and work ethic, as well as the coaching staff that they are making it this difficult. I wasn't sure Kanter had this in him. He is doing so much better and the numbers don't necessarily show it. It will be interesting to see what we do. Unless someone gave us something really good I wouldn't trade Kanter... i wouldn't have said that during the first 10 games.

Rudy is ripped for what weight he does have. My question is what was his weight last season as comapred to what it is now? Anyone know?

He obviously looks bigger and more cut. During the summer league and preseason the media talked a lot about how much bigger he was. But every player in the league who is in a tiny bit better shape has either gained 15 pounds or lost 15 pounds according to their team and media... You can never believe any reports on weight. But the eye test says he's bigger.

It's not that he's non-negotiable, it's just that he's the only real center on our team, and shows a lot of defensive potential along with bball IQ. Those types are kind of rare.

We just need to find out whether Kanter or Favors plays better with him, and get rid of the other.

Again, he needs to be following Hayward around and eating what he eats, because that guy's regimen has been Freakin' genius!

It's also a positive result of competition. When you have 3 guys competing for playing time, practicing against each other, etc, it pulls you up.

Well, the elephant was never in the room until 2 weeks ago, when Gobert started to go beast-mode on us. I'm not sure if the answer is Gobert/Favors or Gobert/Kanter. I don't know if anyone is, including Lindsey and Snyder. Maybe the answer is all 3 at 32 mins. each. Or maybe the answer is none of the above. Perhaps we ultimately need Gobert and a stretch-4. The one constant in those equations is Gobert. Unless he comes down with Kirilenko-itis and develops a love for French literature, I'm pretty sure Gobert is going to keep his intensity going and improve his game this season, next summer, etc. He already change games when he comes in. I have little doubt Gobert WILL be an impact starter. No, he's not going to turn into Hakeem or Shaq, but he will be a top-end starter in just a few years.

What I think likely is the Jazz match any reasonable offer for Kanter. But DL can't take the verbal "we'll match any offer" approach. That just means a team with cap space may be willing to overspend to pry him away. And in anticipation of the cap going way up with the new TV deal, there might be some crazy team lacking a big that throws $15M at him. Keep Kanter and we have a couple of seasons to see which player is a better fit with Gobert. The when Favors' contract comes up, the Jazz make their decision (or Derrick makes it for them by leaving as an UFA).

Exactly. At this point, and probably overall in their respective careers, Favors has more talent. The one thing that Rudy possesses that 99% of the rest of the league does not is size with potential athleticism. Teams with that type of talent are always good, as long as they are not in New York City, I guess. Favors and Kanter might be great players one day, but they are not necessarily unique.

It also depends on what happens in the draft. If we get Okafor or Towns, then this throws another wrench in things. It is a good problem to have. Also, on Kanter, even if the Jazz don't keep him, they might match offers because he could be tradeable. It is an interesting year to be a jazz fan.
