But did you see that eurostep?
Every game he gives us something new that we didn't know he could do. He's come a long way and still has a long way to go. I'm really excited about his future.
But did you see that eurostep?
Gobert apparently yelled at Kanter last night about a defensive rotation. I just love this guy... he has that fire.
Also, why do we need him to have a mid-range shot? All I want from him on offense is to tip in misses, catch and dunk lob passes, set great screens, and make good passes. He's already good enough from the line that you can't go to hack a Gobert. Rudy has the potential to be the best defensive player in the league... that is where he has the most value.
People are just saying that in order for him to be good, he doesn't NEED to be able to shoot.
Ben Wallace was good, Tyson Chandler was good, Mark Eaton was good.
It's would be great if he could develop a shot like Marc gasol it something but he can still be a good player without a good outside shot.
I don't think anyone is saying they dint want him to be a good shooter or anything
But did you see that eurostep?
Why do people keep saying Gobert doesn't need to develop a shot? Every single person on the court should be able to some what shoot the ball.
The longer you wait to teach him to do it, and give him the opportunity to try it, then that's just that much longer before he's ready to be a really good player.
Let's not make the same mistakes we did with guys like Favors, Burks, and Kanter, and have him always be behind in terms of development.
The Jazz have this weird approach of, you aren't gonna play if you aren't a mistake free player. Except for lacking defense. Weak defense will never get you pulled out of the game. It's always, do you look like a professional. Can you just act like you know where you are supposed to be. Missed shots and no defense, no big deal, we'll make you the permanent starter. Hustle your *** off, play defense, but run a couple plays wrong, well then you are a permanent bench player. Nevermind the idea that you might be able to learn how to play if given some time and are taught how to. No, we expect you to know your **** in the offense from day one, don't really care how you impact a game or if you even care.
I'm just ranting. I have no idea where I was going with that

Gawds we do not need a that guy who can do only one stooge thing good every now and then we need a guy who can come through in the cough. Gobert needs a shot.

Kanter has been dramatically improving. Having said that, I would love to see Gobert and Kanter push and challenge each other (as well as the rest of the team). Hold the team and individual players accountable and pressure them to step up. If they are uncomfortable being lazy they are less likely to be so.
It would be near the end of the list for me... I wouldn't ignore it but I'd spend more time in practice working on things he's good at and making them great. I've seen maybe five good lobs thrown to him this year... I've seen a million bounce passes thrown at his knees. He will never be great at handling that pass.
Between physical tools athleticism and work ethics he has as good a shot to be great as any of our young players.
I mostly agree, but I think he does need some reliable offense. The top of his list is absolutely STRENGTH. Once he can hold his position, then hook shots and up-and-unders become possible.
The NBA is full of trainers who know how to improve strength while maintaining mobility. I'm sure Rudy is on this program.
I might say something very stupid, but could Gobert and what he brings in defense have had a positive effect on Kanter ? We all know defense is contagious, because it relies a lot on common belief and shared commitment, ie we are all fully invested in this, whereas well you can't really become offensively talented overnight. In many teams you see one or two players changing the defensive culture almost by themselves because when others buy into the common defense, the effects are very high.
Continually talking is a key in defense, when you watch Bogut or Noah play, they keep directing players from behind, yelling "ice" and such. A big tall center that blocks shot is good to have, but if he also does his job of basically being the PG of the defense, orienting the wings so that the offense is coralled towards the sidelines, etc, than he becomes so much more valuable. The more a defense talks, the better it gets.

Dude, the shot isn't at the top of the list ! In terms of his contribution to the teams' offense, he needs a few credible offensive moves sure. But before an actual normal face up shot, a couple of reliable post moves are more useful. Why ? because we want him in the post on offense, crashing the boards for putbacks, getting the trademark Deandre Jordan / Chandler alley oops. The post is where he is most useful, so the post is where we first want him to have an offense. This means a reliable back to the basket move (ie proper clean hook shot). It doesn't need to be amazing, he can developp reasonably quickly a 2013 Hibbert type of hookshot. This is what we want from him in offense first and foremost.
The risk when you focus too much on the normal shot, is that players tend to fall in love with it and forget their strengths.. There has been countless big men thinking they can start jacking up 18 footers because they have been practising a lot. Ideally if he can have LMA's shot, it would be great, but realistically, all we would need from him is a semi reliable jump shot à la Noah's tornado, to keep the defense semi honest and be able to shoot at the end of possessions.
Ambition is great, but you build a house from the foundations up. The jump shot is the roof for a center.
